UVA DEFENDER GETS HONOR

University of Virginia linebacker Tom Burns has been selected to the 1993 Hitachi/College Football Association Scholar-Athlete team.

Burns, a senior from Clinton, Md., is a nuclear engineering major with a 3.92 grade-point average. He finished the regular season third on the Cavaliers in tackles with 90, broke up two passes, caused a fumble and intercepted a pass. He was a third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice this fall.

In Los Angeles, Radford University's first appearance in the NCAA volleyball tournament - and coach Janell Dobbins' 19-year tenure as the Highlanders' coach ended - with a 15-2, 15-6, 15-1 loss to 13th-ranked Southern California.

Dobbins retires with a 369-219 record. Wytheville's Anne Fontaine led Radford (25-11) with six kills. Southern Cal (22-8) advances to meet Stanford.

Cheryl Rhodes scored 14 points, Emily Rappold added 13, and Aimee Beightol had 12 points, 10 steals, and 5 assists as Cave Spring rolled over Roanoke Catholic in a high school girls' basketball opener for both teams. Beightol's 10 steals is a new team record for Cave Spring, which had 11 players score.
