NABISCO TO IDLE 6,000 WORKERS

Just two weeks after Philip Morris Cos. said it is slashing its work force by 8 percent, arch-competitor RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. said Tuesday it will cut nearly 10 percent, or 6,000 employees, as part of a massive streamlining.

RJR, whose products include Winston and Camel cigarettes, Ritz crackers and Planters peanuts, said the cuts will be spread among administrative, sales and distribution, and employees in tobacco and food operations.

The New York City-based company, which has 63,000 employees worldwide, declined to specify where the cuts will take place. The job cuts include 1,000 announced in August in domestic-tobacco operations. - Newsday
