WINFIELD RECEIVES CRONIN AWARD

Dave Winfield, who got his 3,000th career hit this season, has won the Joe Cronin Award for significant achievement, the American League announced.

Winfield became the 19th major leaguer to reach 3,000 hits when he singled Sept. 16 for Minnesota. In his 21 years, he has 3,014 hits and 453 home runs.

Winfield, who turned 43 on the final weekend of the season, batted .271 with 21 home runs and 76 RBI as a designated hitter and outfielder for the Twins.

Paul Molitor, the Most Valuable Player in Toronto's win in the World Series, was chosen the American League Most Oustanding Designated Hitter for 1993.

Molitor batted .332 with 22 home runs and 111 RBI, along with 22 stolen bases, for the Blue Jays. In 137 games as the DH, he hit .311 with a .386 on-base percentage and .479 slugging percentage. He led all DHs with 107 runs.

During the season, Molitor made 23 appearances in the field, all at first base. Molitor, 38, starred in his first season with Toronto after leaving Milwaukee as a free agent.
