SEASONAL EVENTS FILL CHURCH CALENDARS

As we approach the final week of Advent - when Christians prepare themselves spiritually for the arrival of the Christ - several churches have scheduled special events, from live nativity scenes to cantatas and other seasonal presentations:

The Senior High Youth Group at CHRISTIANSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 107 W. Main St., will go Christmas caroling tonight at 5. The church will have its Christmas music program Sunday during the 10:55 a.m. worship service.

The Chancel Choir of FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Pulaski, will present "The Singing Christmas Tree," today and Sunday, at 5:30 p.m. The choir, directed by Bettye Steger, will perform both secular and sacred songs. The Christmas cantata "Rejoice, Believers" by John Coates will be presented Sunday, 11 a.m., by the adult choir of GOOD SHEPHERD BAPTIST CHURCH, Dunlap Drive, Christiansburg, mile on the left past the Huckleberry Inn. Sharon Knight directs the choir and Debbie Allen is the accompanist.

"Christmas For All Time," a cantata, will be presented at CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH, 622 Sixth St., Radford, Sunday, 11 a.m. Call 639-0727 to find out more.

The WESLEY MEMORIAL CHURCH choir, directed by Carolyn Johnston, will present "Noel, Jesus is Born," Sunday, 4 p.m. at the church on Stafford Drive, off Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114).

The choir of NEWPORT-MOUNT OLIVET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH will present the cantata "A Simple Christmas," Sunday at 7 p.m. Meridel Jackson will accompany the choir. The new instrumental group will perform before the cantata. Call Nancy Maxey, 544-7789, to find out more.

The 42-member chancel choir of MAIN STREET BAPTIST CHURCH, 100 W. Main St., Christiansburg, will present "From Heaven's Throne" Sunday, 7 p.m., in the sanctuary. A preschool nursery is available.

The Christmas drama, "No Greater Love Than This" will be offered Sunday, 7 p.m., at MERRIMAC PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH. The church youth will present a live nativity scene Monday through Thursday, 6-8 p.m. in the fellowship hall parking lot. Call Jerry Sloss, 552-5070 for details.

\ SAINT JUDE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, in temporary quarters at 7318 Peppers Ferry Road in Fairlawn (next to Robin Hood Rentals), will hold an Advent Penance service Monday, 7 p.m. For more information, call 639-5341.

\ CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Church and Jackson streets, Blacksburg, will offer the last of the series of meditations "Out of Silences," based on the Gospel of St. Luke, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. For more information, call the church at 552-2411.

\ GRACE ASSEMBLY, 2030 Redwood Drive, Christiansburg, will have a live nativity scene and caroling Tuesday and Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. each day. Call the Rev. Bob Goldstein, 381-0055, to find out more.

Weather permitting, the BELMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH youth will present a live nativity scene Tuesday and Wednesday, 6:30-8 p.m., at the church, Dominion Drive off Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114), a mile from the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles office. The nativity scene will feature live animals. The theme is "From the Cradle to the Cross."

\ COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH at Newbern will present a living Nativity tableau on its lawn Thursday night and Christmas Eve, 7 to 8 both days.

"The Anatomy of Giving: Finding the Heart," by Radford University Philosophy and Religion Professor Russell Gregory will be offered Sunday, 10:30 a.m., at the UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF THE NEW RIVER VALLEY, 1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg.

Southern gospel duo BOB AND SANDY MULLINS of Second Chance Ministries will appear Sunday, 10:30 a.m., at Harris Chapel United Methodist Church in Willis. They'll also sing New Year's Eve at a watch night service at Lords Full Gospel Mission Church, Pilot.

Church Names in the News:

Three new members have been elected to the Vestry of the Saint Peter's Anglican Catholic Church parish. They are GAIL CHAMPION and BETSY HAYES, both of Radford, and CLEMENS VON CLAPARADE-CROLA of Alum Ridge. All will serve three-year terms.
