OBIT SIMMONS, L. ARNOLD

SIMMONS, L. Arnold, ("Arnie"), 62, of Floyd, passed away in the VA Medical Center, Salem Thursday, December 16, 1993. He was born in Eden, N.C. He graduated from Wake Forest University and received his Masters Degree in social work from the University of Tennessee. He retired after 30 years of service as Chief, Social Work Service at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Throughout his career he served at centers in Salisbury, N.C., St. Cloud, Minn., Augusta, Ga. and most recently in Salem, Va. He received numerous commendations and awards. He also had faculty appointments at St. Johns University, Minn., University of Georgia, Medical College of Georgia and adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a Member of the Floyd United Methodist Church. He served on the Floyd County School Board and The New River Community Services Board. He was on the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association of the Roanoke Valley. He was preceded in death by his mother Alma Dillon Simmons and father Julian Simmons. He is survived by his wife, Meredith Ann Simmons, Floyd; two sons, Jonathan Dillon Simmons, Floyd, Matthew Arn Simmons, Floyd; one brother and sister-in-law, Oscar and June Simmons, Floyd; one sister, Kathleen Jarrett, Eden, N.C.; four nephews; stepfather, Albert Lemons, Eden, N.C. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 1993 at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd with the Rev. Leonard Arnold and Dr. Michael Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, where the family will be from 7 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the W.C. Mitchum Fund 3A at the Veterans Administration Medical Center through Volunteer Services.
