STANFORD TOPS UVA WITH RALLY

Stanford remained unbeaten Wednesday night by rallying for a 84-72 victory over Virginia in men's college basketball.

The Cardinal, who trailed 55-48 with under 10 minutes remaining, took command behind the long-range shooting of guards Dion Cross and Brevin Knight.

Stanford (6-0) did not take the lead for good until Cross hit a 3-pointer to make it 62-60 with just under five minutes left. It was the start of a 15-3 run for the Cardinal.

Knight scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, all in the final 9 minutes, 35 seconds. Cross added 16 points, including four 3-pointers.

Junior Burrough scored 20 points to lead the Cavaliers (3-3). Jason Williford contributed 14 points and Cornel Parker added 12.

There were nine lead changes in the first half until Knight hit a jumper to put the Cardinal ahead 19-18 with just 10 under minutes left in the half.

Stanford pushed its lead to 31-24 before taking a 35-30 halftime lead. The Cavaliers were fortunate to be that close after being whistled for 13 fouls, two each by five players.

The Cardinal, shooting 77.5 percent from the free-throw line, were only 11-of-18 in the first half. Virginia was even worse, converting only two of six first-half free throws.

Virginia will return to action next Tuesday, when 16th-ranked Minnesota makes its first visit to University Hall.
