RELIGION BRIEFS

THE REV. JULIE HOLLINGSWORTH, director of Roanoke Area Ministries, has resigned from the pastorate of Virginia Presbyterian Church near Buchanan to devote her full time to the interfaith service agency for the Roanoke Valley needy. Hollingsworth said her work at RAM is now considered her official ministry by the Presbyterian regional body of which she is a member.

\ UNITY OF ROANOKE VALLEY, 3300 Green Ridge Road N.W., has scheduled several services to celebrate the birth of Christ and the coming new year.

Christmas Eve candlelighting service will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include special music. A nursery will be staffed. The Sunday service will be at 11 a.m. On Dec. 31 at 7 a.m. Unity will sponsor a World Peace Service with prayers at 7 a.m. and a New Year's Eve liturgy at 7 p.m.

\ RALEIGH COURT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1837 Grandin Road S.W., has scheduled two Christmas Eve services Friday. . The first at 5 p.m. will feature a musical play, "A Night for Dancing," with music by the Carol and Chorister Choirs. Communion will be received. At the 10:30 p.m. service, special music will be presented by several instrumentalists.

\ FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 2101 S. Jefferson St., will have a family service on Christmas Eve at 5 p.m. with music by the youth choirs. A later service by candlelight will begin at 10:40 p.m. with special choral and organ music.

\ ST JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Elm at South Jefferson in downtown Roanoke, will hold a Christmas Eve pageant at 4 p.m. and a late liturgy starting with special music at 10:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist will be included at each. On Christmas Day, the Eucharist will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

\ At CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., celebration of Christmas will begin Friday with a pageant and Eucharist at 4 p.m. Special music at 10:30 p.m. precedes the Festival Holy Eucharist. On Christmas Day, a service with Eucharist and carols will begin at 11 a.m.

\ THE REV. EDWARD TAYLOR, a retired United Methodist minister now living in Vinton, is serving temporarily as pastor of South Roanoke United Methodist Church while the Rev. James Hain is on a three-month leave of absence. The church will have a Christmas Eve Communion service at 7:30 p.m. It is at South Jefferson and 24th Street.

\ ST. ELIZABETH'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 2339 Grandin Road S.W., has scheduled its Christmas services for Friday at 5:30 and 10:30 p.m. The early service will be carols and Scripture. At the later service, special music precedes the 11 p.m. Eucharist. On Christmas Day at 10:30 a.m., another Communion service will be held.

\ CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH'S Christmas Eve services will begin at 7 p.m. for carols by candlelight and at 11 p.m. for the Christmas Eucharist. The youth group is caroling in the Raleigh Court area tonight starting at 6:30. The church is at 2011 Brandon Ave. S.W.

\ GREENE MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 402 Second St. S.W. in downtown Roanoke, has scheduled a family service of carols and Scripture at 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The later service at 11 p.m. will include Communion and special music by candlelight.

\ At WEST END PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1200 Campbell Ave. S.W., a family Christmas Eve service by candlelight will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a social.

\ UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH, Grandin Road at Brandon Avenue, will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m., followed by a cookie party. No service will be held at the church on Sunday.

\ CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH, 608 Campbell Ave. S.W., has planned a family service of Communion and carols by candlelight on Christmas Eve from 5 to 6 p.m.

\ ST. MARK'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1008 Franklin Road, S.W., will celebrate Christmas Eve with a family service at 4 p.m. that includes Communion. The late service at 11 p.m. is preceded at 10:30 by special music.

\ SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Mountain Avenue at Third Street Southwest, has scheduled three Christmas Eve services. Communion will be provided at a noon chapel service, for which child care also is available. There will be a 5:30 p.m. family service and traditional Communion at 11 p.m.

\ ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4608 Brambleton Ave. S.W., celebrates Christmas Eve with a family service at 7 p.m. and a later service at 11 p.m. Both will be by candlelight.
