NAMES & CHANGES

Singer appoints officers

Singer Furniture Co. in Roanoke has named ED PARRISH to the newly created position of senior vice president for operations. He formerly was vice president of operations planning and support. In his new capacity, Parrish will be responsible for planning, purchasing, quality management and all of the company's manufacturing operations.

Prior to joining Singer in 1993, Parrish was vice president of operations planning for Masco Home Furniture. Before that, he worked for Henredon Furniture Industries in the operations planning field.

Also at Singer, KENNETH N. SHIPLEY has been named forecasting and planning manager. He will be responsible for preparation of operating forecasts, maintenance of service level strategy, and development of long-term production and inventory strategies for each plant. He comes to Singer from Berol Corp., where he was forecasting manager. Previously he was with Rubbermaid Inc. in Wooster, Ohio.

\ JOHN BARLOW has been promoted to senior human resource manager at Singer. He has been human resource manager at the Roanoke plant since 1992 and will move to the company's Lenoir, N.C., complex. He formerly was human resource manager for Stanley Furniture Co. Inc.

Also, KIM CARTE has been promoted to human resource manager for Singer's Roanoke plant. She joined the company in 1985 as benefits manager and was promoted to corporate benefits manager in 1987.

ARCHITECTS and ENGINEERS

At Balzer and Associates Inc., Planners, Architects, Engineers and Surveyors, the following officers were elected: DONALD J. BALZER JR., president; R. CRAIG BALZER, executive vice president; JAMES W. McADEN, secretary/treasurer; and RONALD R. GREEN, senior vice president. Elected vice presidents were JO ANN MULLIGAN, MARK B. BEALL, JOHN D. FULTON JR., THOMAS R. BALZER, ANDREW M. SCHERZER, JAMES F. KINDER JR., JOHN R. McADEN, and ROBERT S. LANG.

BANKING

At Piedmont Bank Group Inc. in Martinsville, S. RICHARD BAGBY has been elected senior vice president and chief credit officer in charge of credit administration for the bank holding company. He formerly was vice president for commercial loans at Piedmont Trust Bank. In his new position he will be responsible for the management of the corporation's credit quality control process, including development of credit standards, policies and procedures dealing with primarily commercial, commercial real estate and dealer floor plan lending to all affiliate members banks of the holding company.

Also, NOEL L. CHITWOOD has been named vice president in charge of the commercial division of Piedmont Trust Bank. His responsibilities will include commercial loan account administration, commercial credit analysis and new business development, corporate cash management services, dealer floor plan arrangements and commercial real estate. He joined Piedmont Trust Bank in 1991.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

MARSHA UPDIKE MELTON has joined Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc. as an\ investment executive in its Bedford office. She joins the brokerage firm\ following 14 years with the Virginia judicial system.

GOVERNMENTAL

VICKIE ASHWELL of Roanoke has been appointed to a four-year term on the state Board of Cosmetology. She is employed with Regis Hairstylist. HEALTH CARE The Child Health Investment Partnership has elected four members to its board of directors: JEAN GLONTZ, former president of the United Way of Roanoke Valley; NATALIE LEMON, community volunteer; CHARLES I. LUNSFORD II, chairman of Chas. Lunsford Sons and Associates; and LEWIS M. NELSON JR., senior vice president of NationsBank and member of the state Board of Education.

CHIP was founded in 1988 to provide comprehensive health care services to low-income children. The Roanoke program has served as a model for seven other localities across the state.

INVESTMENT FIRMS

CHERYL A. HAWKINS, formerly of Roanoke, has been made an officer of Island Capital Corp. in Amelia Island, Fla. She was with the Roanoke law firm of Gentry, Locke, Rakes & Moore for 10 years prior to joining Island Capital as office manager in February 1993. Island Capital is a private investment firm that purchases and develops medium-sized industrial companies. It owns two companies in Ohio and one in West Virginia.

MEDICINE

DR. LUCIAN Y. GROVE JR. has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a professional organization of internists. Grove has practiced general internal medicine at Lewis-Gale Clinic in Salem since 1985. He is a member of the Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine, the Roanoke Valley Academy Foundation, the American Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians. He received his board certification in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1986.

Carilion Health System has promoted JUDIE S. SNIPES from vice president to\ senior vice president. Also, A. DALE BYINGTON, SHIRLEY B. HOLLAND, MARY\ WILLINGTON-HUNT, and JOHN R.A. WEBSTER have been named vice presidents.

NONPROFITS

L. JOHNSON SARBER III, an attorney with Johnson, Ayers & Matthews, and FAYE DUNDORE of Roanoke, have been appointed to the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center Inc. Reappointed for an additional term were EDWIN McGRATH, director of community support services for the Blue Ridge Community Services Board, Counseling and Life Skills Center; and CHANCE CRAWFORD, clerk of the Circuit Court in Salem.

The independent living center is a private, nonprofit, nonresidential program that provides services to people with disabilities residing in the 5th Planning District.
