COMMON TERMS AND ACRONYMS

Catheterization laboratories or cath labs - cardiac diagnostic equipment that tests for artery blockages and measures and evaluates pressure in different heart chambers and vessels.

Computed tomography scan - CT scan (pronounced CAT scan) - special equipment for head and body scans; located in emergency department.

Coronary care unit or CCU - seventh-floor coronary intensive care unit.

Emergency Department or ED - 24-hour-per-day medical care for urgent and non-urgent conditions and injuries.

Hazmat - hazardous materials.

Intensive care unit or ICU - provides patient with comprehensive observation and care, staffed with specially trained nursing personnel, have monitoring and support equipment.

Life-Guard 10 - the Bell 412 helicopter owned by Roanoke Memorial Hospital; used for rapid transport of critically ill or injured patients.

Medical/surgical intensive care unit or MSICU, eighth floor.

Neuro-trauma intensive care unit or NTICU, ninth floor.

Triage - system of establishing acuity level (seriousness) of patient.
