In Newport News, a federal magistrate questioned whether a bowling-alley employee has any grounds for claiming Sports Illustrated smeared her reputation in an article on the Allen Iverson controversy.

Julia Weaver, suing Sports Illustrated for $1 million, said the magazine libelously implied she was a racist in an Oct. 25 article by incorrectly reporting that she assigned the high school basketball star and his friends to a lane at the end of the bowling alley as an insult. Judge James E. Bradberry said it may take him awhile to issue a ruling on the magazine's request to have the libel suit thrown out.
