RELIGION BRIEFS

FOLK GUITARIST CHARLIE KING, who also is a Christian humorist, will perform March 25 at Second Presbyterian Church to benefit Roanoke Area Ministries. A contribution of $5 is suggested. The program will begin at 8 p.m. at the church at 214 Mountain Ave. S.W.

The King concert offering will provide funds for prescription medicines that many poor Roanoke Valley residents are unable to afford. Helping pay for these is one of the services RAM offers in its emergency aid program, said Susan Adams, a staff member of the ecumenical agency.

HOLY THURSDAY LITURGY on March 31 at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church will include a procession into the church from the parking lot at 2505 Electric Road S.W. The procession will begin at 7 p.m. In the church, Mass will include a foot-washing ritual followed by another procession in which offerings, representing the worshipers, will be carried to the chapel. The service , which recalls Jesus' last evening with his friends before the crucifixion, will end with kneeling in the parish garden.

MILL CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH in Botetourt County has chosen the Rev. Dr. Harold W. Penick as its next pastor. He succeeds the Rev. Tony Neal.

Penick, who will begin his ministry on April 10, is coming from Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bethlehem, Ky. He is 44 and a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

PATTERSON MEMORIAL GRACE BRETHREN CHURCH, 5512 Hollins Road, has scheduled a performance by an instrumental ensemble of Mansfield Christian School in Ohio for Sundayat 11 a.m.

AIRLEE COURT BAPTIST CHURCH, 4827 Delray St. N.W., will have special music Sunday at the 7 p.m. service. A combined choir of members of Forest Park Baptist Church and First Baptist on North Jefferson Street will sing. The pastor of Forest Park, the Rev. Frank Feather, will preach.

BRENDA A. POWELL has been named Woman of the Year at High Street Baptist Church. A member of the church since childhood, Powell, 40, is an employee of Norfolk Southern Corp. She has been active in numerous civic organizations including the YWCA, the Roanoke Chapter of the NAACP, the Henry Street Music Center, the City Manager's Task Force on Community Relations and the Fair Housing Board.

At High Street, Powell is chairman of the church anniversary group and has been active in Sunday school and pastor recognition activities.

She is the daughter of Herman and Louise Powell of Roanoke and a 1975 graduate of Virginia Union University.

FIRST WESLEYAN CHURCH has postponed revival services for the week of March 20 because of illness of the speaker, the Rev. Robert W. McIntyre.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF HOLLINS, Womack Drive at Reservoir Road, will sponsor a youth rally Saturday at 2 p.m. Staff members, the Rev. Charles Calloway and the Rev. Napoleon Jones, will lead the rally that is open to teens and young adults.

On Sunday at 3:30 p.m., the Crawford Brothers and other Roanoke Valley singers will perform in concert.

DALEVILLE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN on U.S. 220 will be the site of a new elderly adult day-care facility. At the beginning of operation, the center will be open two days a week and will be on the lower level of the building. Meals will be provided by the League of Older Americans.

GREATER MOUNT ZION BAPTIST CHURCH, 1810 Grayson Ave. N.W., will present a a program, ``Fruit of the Spirit,'' Saturday at 6 p.m.

OLD DOMINION MEMORIAL GARDENS, Alternate U.S. 220 north of Bonsack, will be the site of an Easter sunrise service on April 3 at 7. The Rev. Dr. Robert Moore of Bonsack Baptist Church will speak.

EDGEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1006 Peck St. N.W., has scheduled Destiny, a musical ensemble from Kentucky Christian College, for concerts April 16 and 17. The April 16 program is at 7:30 p.m., and the April 17 presentation starts at 11 a.m. and will introduce revival services.

Lawrence Harris of Stone Memorial Christian Church in Collinsville will preach for the nightly services through April 21. Sunday night service starts at 6:30 with those during the week at 7.
