BTI Telecommunications Services, a Raleigh, N.C. long-distance telephone company serving businesses, has opened a regional sales office at 3140 Chaparral Drive in Roanoke County. Gary Tomlin is regional sales manager.

The Credit Union of Virginia Tech is participating in the 1994 Education Exchange, a college grant program to award $100,000 to eligible high school seniors to pursue careers in technology and business. The program is sponsored by the Exchange International, a Clifton, N.J. automated teller machine network, and its regional networks, MPACT and Instant Teller.

Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. has named a 220-student residence hall in honor of William A. Collins Jr., a Bassett resident who formerly operated funeral homes in Bassett and Martinsville. Collins, a Wake Forest graduate, and his wife, Sue, established a $2.1 million trust to provide scholarships for Wake Forest students from Virginia.

Lanford Brothers Co. Inc., a Roanoke highway and bridge construction company, was named as the prime contractor of the year by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The company, also named prime contract for the agency's Salem District, was cited for high quality work and commitment to continuous improvement.

Also cited was Gregory Seeding & Landscaping Inc. of Pulaski and SAN-MAR-CO of Buchanan among 19 disadvantaged business enterprises. The Gregory company performs roadside erosion control and landscaping. SAN-MAR-CO, also known as Sandra's Marking Co. Inc., supplies marking and traffic control devices.

The May Department Stores Co., St. Louis parent of Hecht's and Payless ShoeSource stores, on Friday increased its common stock dividend to $1.04 per share, from the current annual rate of 92 cents. The new dividend rate will be effective with the June 15 payment.
