VIRGINIA BLASTS MASSACHUSETTS 20-6

Greg Traynor scored a career-high six goals as fifth-ranked Virginia opened a 5-0 lead and whipped Massachusetts 20-6 in Hempstead, N.Y., in men's lacrosse.

Traynor had two of the first five goals for the Cavaliers (2-1). After the Minutemen (0-1), ranked eighth in Division I, scored twice to close to 5-2, the Cavaliers scored 10 consecutive goals to close the half.

Neal Powless scored five goals as Nazareth, ranked second in Division III, used a 7-1 third quarter to beat eighth-ranked Roanoke 16-8 at Alumni Field in Salem. Brett Smith led the Maroons (3-2) with four goals.

Craig Grevelding made 21 saves as Marist beat VMI 11-8 in Lexington. The Keydets (3-2) were hampered by 13 penalties, which kept VMI players off the field for a total of 12 minutes.

Dave Curry scored three goals as Gettysburg (3-0) beat Washington and Lee 10-7 in Lexington. Scott Mackley and Ande Jenkins led the Generals (3-3) with two goals apiece.

Jen Ward and Rebecca Savage scored four goals apiece as John Hopkins beat host Roanoke 11-7 in a women's game. The Maroons (2-1) were led by Francesca Foord-Kelcey's four goals.
