THE TIPOFF

THE LIVELY ARTS: African culture, music and dance will be shared Saturday night at 7 during the performance of Chihamba of Dancescape. The Charlottesville troupe will entertain at Whitman Auditorium of Virginia Western Community College under the auspices of the Roanoke-Kisumu Sister City Committee.

Tickets are $10 and may be reserved by calling the Virginia Western bookstore at 857-7334.

IT'S BACK: Olde Salem Days begins tonight with a concert at Municipal Field featuring the Rhythm Doctors at 6 and Truckers Delight at 8:45. Tickets are $3, and children under 12 get in free.

The annual event blossoms on Saturday with entertainment beginning at 10 a.m. at the Library Square, the Court House and in Longwood Park. In addition, more than 400 artists and craftsmen will sell their wares in downtown Salem, and the antique car show is expected to draw more than 200 vehicles.

Robotica, a 9.5-foot tall robot, will star at the children's fair in Longwood Park, and international foods will be available at the park and at the downtown food court. Free parking will be at Salem Stadium, with free shuttle buses operating from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from the parking lot.

AMERICAN HERITAGE: The Virginia Museum of Natural History will present its 10th Indian Heritage Festival and Powwow on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Martinsville Junior High School.

American Indians from many tribes and states will participate. Performers will include the Nakomis Fortune Lemons and Rising Water Dancers, Falling Water Drum. The powwow itself will start at noon.

Traditional traders, crafters, toolmakers, Indian lore and traditional foods will be featured all day. Spectators should bring lawn chairs and blankets. Information is at 666-8600.

PICK AND GRIN: The first Maury River Fiddlers Convention is under way at Glen Maury Park by the Maury River in Buena Vista. A total of $2,500 in cash prizes will be awarded to participants in 14 categories. Bands will take the stage at 6 this evening. Saturday afternoon is to feature folk singing and dancing. The finals in the band competition will be Saturday night.

Admission is $5 today and $6 on Saturday. Call 261-7321 for information.

OUTSIDE: United Way of Roanoke Valley will kick off its community-wide campaign today at noon in Elmwood Park in downtown Roanoke. The William Penn Trio will play, and Deborah Liles will sing. Lunch will be available for $2, and United Way agencies will have informational displays. Bad weather will move everything to the Star City Ballroom on the third floor of the City Market building.

STEP RIGHT UP: The Roanoke Branch of the American Association of University Women will have its annual book sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the steps of the Main Library in downtown Roanoke. The sale will continue on Sunday.

GOOD TIMES: Bethany Hall, a recovery home for women, will benefit from the proceeds of the choral pops concert titled ``On the Town Again.''

It will be presented by the parish and junior choirs and soloists of Christ Episcopal Church in Roanoke. it will take place Saturday night at 7 in the church's parish hall at 1101 Franklin Road S.W.

Music from Broadway, the movies and the 1930s hit parade, plus a sing-along, will be featured.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 12 and under. Call 343-4261.

TOP POPS: ``An Evening at the Pops'' is the title of Saturday night's cabaret concert of classical favorites for the whole family. The doors will open at 5:30 in the Commonwealth Ballroom of Squires Student Center of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, and dinner service will begin at 6.

The entertainment is sponsored by the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children age 12 and under. The tickets are on sale at the Virginia Tech arts box office in Squires and they will be sold at the door. Call 231-5615 for details.

REPEAT AFTER ME: Comedian and hypnotist Tom DeLuca will perform at Roanoke College's Olin Theater tonight at 8. He's hot on the campus concert circuit, mostly because he is decidedly not solemn about his work.

His appearance is open to the public. Tickets are on sale at the Sutton Student Center Cavern. The price is $5. Information is at 375-2306.
