IN SERVICE

Two area servicemen recently received top honors in the 1994 Philip A. Connely Award Competiton. The award, established in 1968, recognizes the best dining facilities in the Army. Awards are given to best- and second-best facilities in five categories: large and small, active Army, National Guard and Army Reserve field kitchens. The competition is sponsored by the International Food Service Executives Association and the Department of the Army. The agencies send five teams around the world to evaluate each kitchen on food preparation, service, cleanliness and innovative ways to serve soldiers. Army Sgt.1st Class EUGENE ANDERSON, son of Oretha Anderson of Pearisburg, was awarded top honors for best Army Reserve field kitchen. Anderson is food-service sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, 318th Regiment, Dublin. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class MICHAEL W. WATSON, son of Harvey Watson of Christiansburg, was awarded top honors in the field kitchen category. He is dining facility manager for the 2nd Battalion, 318th Regiment, Army Reserve unit in Dublin.

Air Force Airman BRAD L. ROOP, son of Jack and Janet Roop of Radford, completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Air Force ROTC Captain MIKE PILKENTON, Virginia Tech freshman instructor, is 1994 national powerlifting champion in the 181-pound division. Pilkenton, a member of the Tech's powerlifting team,won at the National Athletic Strength Asociation's Natural Nationals held in Pittsburgh. His total lifted weight - 1,630 pounds - consisted of 369-pound bench press, 628-pound squat and 633-pound deadHe holds six 1993 state and regional powerlifting records

Navy Chief Petty Officer ROBERT B. WHITE, son of John M. and Patsy White of Blacksburg, recently received a Letter of Commendation. White was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned aboard the submarine USS Sunfish, home-ported in Norfolk.

Navy Seaman Apprentice TROY H. SUTTON, son of Bonie Sutton of Narrows, recently departed for a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans aboard the tank landing ship USS Spartanburg County, home-ported in Little Creek.

Navy Fireman Apprentice RACHAEL A. HILL, daughter of Louise Rogers of Boones Mill, is attending the Apprenticeship Training Program, Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.

Navy Airman Recruit STEPHEN C. SNIDER, son of Paul Snider Jr. of Atkins, has completed the Basic Structural Mechanic Course, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Air Station Memphis, Tenn.

Navy Fireman Recruit NEAL E. MANNON, son of Roger H. and Nancy G. Mannon of Floyd, has completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Marine Pvt. TERRY W. AULABAUGH, son of Dawn E. McCoy of Pulaski, completed training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Navy Airman MICHAEL T. DOWNING, son of Richard and Linda C. Hamilton of Elliston, recently departed for a six-month Western Pacific and Indian Ocean deployment with Strike Fighter Squadron 97, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, Calif., as part of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk Battle Group.

Marine Staff Sgt. ANTHONY G. LEE, son of Mary L. Ramsey of Radford, has reported for duty with Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class ROBERT C. McGRATH, son of Charles J. McGrath of Blacksburg, has returned from a six-month Mediterranean and Adriatic deployment aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea, home-ported in Mayport, Fla., operating in support of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga Joint Task Group and allied ships in the region.
