UVA WHIPS COLONIALS IN SOCCER

A.J. Wood scored three goals and Tain Nix added two Wednesday as the Virginia men's soccer team clobbered George Washington 7-0 in Charlottesville.

The third-ranked Cavaliers (6-1) scored five goals in the final 20 minutes of the opening half, including three by Wood, a fourth-year forward.

Nate Friends scored two minutes into the second period and freshman Sam Franklin scored his first UVa career goal to give the Cavaliers the final margin over the Colonials (1-5).

In other regional news:

Three players had goals and Andy Smith registered two assists as Roanoke (5-3, 3-0) defeated Guilford (1-4-1, 1-2) 3-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer game in Salem.

Alyson Patrick and Chris Webb had two goals each as North Carolina Wesleyan (5-1) defeated Ferrum (2-3) 4-0 in Dixie Conference women's soccer at Ferrum.

At Lexington, ten different players scored for the Washington and Lee women's soccer team, which cruised past Hollins 10-1 in an ODAC contest. Erica Reineke and Michelle Bauman led the Generals (3-1, 2-1) with four points each.

Julie Reule and Ashley Williamson had two goals and one assist each to lead James Madison (3-3) to a 9-0 victory over Radford (3-4) in a women's soccer match in Harrisonburg. It was the worst defeat in the history of Radford's program.

Five different players scored for Virginia Commonwealth, which downed Radford 6-0 in a men's non-conference soccer game in Richmond. The Rams (3-4), which outshot the Highlanders 16-13, got two goals and one assist from Kwaku Adu-Gyamfi. Radford fell to 4-2-2.

At Chapel Hill, N.C., top-ranked North Carolina improved to 6-0 this season by defeating Radford 3-0 in field hockey. The Highlanders (2-5) were outshot 38-0 by the Tar Heels. Lindsay Watson made 23 saves in goal for Radford.

Blue Hills head professional Billy King shot a two-round total of 143 to win the seniors' division of the Mid-Atlantic PGA Southern Chapter Championship on Wednesday at Lee's Hill Golf Club in Fredericksburg. Chip Sullivan, teaching professional at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, finished fourth in the regular division, five shots behind winner Rob McNamara of Farmington Country Club.

Blacksburg runners Scott Shepherd and Sara Hendricks were individual winners of a high school cross country meet in Salem. Shepherd covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 13 seconds, and Hendricks was timed in 21:32. Blacksburg won the boys' meet and Salem edged the Indians 28-29 to win the girls' portion.

David Angell of Franklin County and Claire Rotramel of Cave Spring set course records in a cross country meet at Franklin County. Angell covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:02, and Rotramel was timed in 22:27.

Three players had two goals each as Eastern Mennonite (3-1) defeated Roanoke Valley Christian (2-1) 6-1 Tuesday in Virginia Independent Conference boys' soccer. Ben Thomas scored RVC's lone goal off a corner kick by Joe Surkamer.
