UNC SOCCER TEAM SETS COLLEGE MARK

The North Carolina women's soccer team won its 89th straight game Wednesday, setting the unofficial record for the longest winning streak in college sports.

The 5-1 victory over rival N.C. State in Raleigh broke the mark of 88 in a row set by the UCLA men's basketball team during the early 1970s.

But the record won't be recognized by the NCAA because the association only keeps records on football, men's and women's basketball, softball, baseball and women's volleyball.

There's a possibility that a longer streak might exist in lacrosse or swimming, but the NCAA takes no formal note of it.

The Tar Heels are 8-0 this season and have compiled a record of 189-1-7 over the past nine seasons.
