IN SCHOOL

WILLIAM FLEMING HIGH SCHOOL was represented at the Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project Conference by Amanda Sheetz, Reginald Thompson, Taheerah Muhammad, Matthew Grogan and Joe Alisauskas. The conference at Longwood College was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education to provide leadership training for youth involved in the ongoing effort to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by their peers.

Students were selected for their school team based on their leadership skills and their personal commitment to lead drug-free lives. More than 500 students and sponsors attended the conference.

CHRIS SURRUSCO, son of Dr. Richard and Barbara Surrusco of Roanoke, has been named to the spring semester dean's list at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. He is a sophomore in the college of arts and sciences.

KATHERN E. LANPHEAR of Roanoke was named to the spring 1994 dean's list at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Lanphear is a journalism major.

BURMAN CLARK of Roanoke has been named president of the Roanoke Alumni Club of Randolph-Macon College. Clark, a 1988 graduate of the college, is an employee benefits broker with D&S Life Agency. The club holds local events for alumni, parents and friends of the college.

JAMES ANDRES PAULEY of Danville and ELIZABETH MacGREGOR NORDT of Salem were named to the dean's list at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

ANNA T. FOSTER of Roanoke, has been awarded a $500 academic scholarship by the National Society of Public Accountants Scholarship Foundation. Foster will be completing her sophomore year at National Business College this year

VIRGINIA WESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE has received an Integration grant from the Virginia Campus Outreach Opportunity League.

The college awarded seven $500 scholarships and two $250 scholarships with the funds. Local recipients are: Tonya Blankenship of Troutville in the early childhood development curriculum; Steven Bowman, Tsion Tewolde and Randy Cook, all of Roanoke, in the science curriculum; Charles Crush of Roanoke in the accounting curriculum; Jeffrey Welch of Roanoke in the nursing curriculum; and Patricia Steahly of Vinton in the mental health curriculum.

The league is a network of higher education institutions in Virginia which promotes and empowers campus-based community service. Its funding comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

PAM BROOKS NEWBURY of Salem recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. The award, which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, honors exemplary math and science teachers from around the nation.

Newbury, daughter of Willie Edna Brooks of Salem and graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, is a teacher at George Wythe High School.
