WEST END PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1200 Campbell Ave. S.W., plans its 85th anniversary homecoming Sunday. Lunch will be served after the 11 a.m. service. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Richard Lindsey of Richmond. He was West End pastor about 15 years ago.

MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS WEEK will be observed Oct. 2-8 in the Roanoke Valley by the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, a grassroots organization made up of those suffering chronic mental illness and their families.

At a recent meeting of the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference, Mildred Willis president of the alliance, urged church leaders to educate themselves about mental illness so that sufferers will be received in churches as if they are ill, not of weak character.

The Roanoke Valley group will participate in a national candlelight vigil on the opening Sunday of the observance. It will be at 7:30 p.m. in Elmwood Park Amphitheater or at nearby St. John's Episcopal Church if it rains.

A FREE ORGAN RECITAL, featuring Hector Olivera, an Argentine-born concert organist now living in the Atlanta area, will be held Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church, 608 Campbell Ave. S.W. The program celebrates dedication of a restored portion of the Calvary pipe organ.

Olivera also will perform on an electronic instrument for which he serves as a representative of the manufacturer.

THE REV. TERRY WILLIS has resigned as pastor of Melrose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) after almost four years. Willis, who will leave effective Sept. 30, said he is seeking a part-time pastorate to permit him to engage in secular work.

CONNIE GAMMON, a gospel singer, will perform Sunday at 4 p.m. at High Street Baptist Church for the celebration of the Adult Usher Board. The church is at 2302 Florida Ave. N.W.

ST. GERARD CATHOLIC CHURCH members will observe the 48th anniversary of the founding of the parish with a dinner and dance at the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel. Hours for the Oct. 14 event will be from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tickets available at the church are $22 per person. Call 343-7744 for more information.

GREATER MOUNT ZION BAPTIST CHURCH members have observed the 110th anniversary of the congregation which now worships at 1810 Grayson Ave. N.W. Dating from 1884, the congregation has worshiped in four buildings. The Rev. Antonio D. Thomas is now pastor.

WINGS OF FAITH, a country gospel band, will perform Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. and the following day at 2 p.m. at Fincastle Church of God of Prophecy at Roanoke and Academy streets in Fincastle.

THE REV. DON BATTEY has begun classes in developing mediumship and channeling at Rainbow Chapel, 1575 Stoney Battery Road, Troutville. The classes continue for 11 weeks each Wednesday from 7 to 9.

Another class, Adventure into Other Dimensions, starts tonight. It will meet on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m. for four weeks. Call 992-1384 for more information.

RED HILL BAPTIST CHURCH, U.S. 220 south of Roanoke, has planned its 150th anniversary homecoming on Oct. 2, beginning at 9:45 a.m. Worship at 11 a.m. will be followed by potluck dinner and afternoon music program.

SOUTHEAST CHILDREN'S FUN DAYwill take place Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of Belmont Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1101 Jamison Ave. S.E. The event, which last year attracted more than 300 youngsters and their families, is an outreach ministry of the church. It includes games, music and food as well as a sale of children's' articles

AT LOCUST GROVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH homecoming will be observed Sunday starting at 9:45 a.m. Guest preacher at the 11 a.m. service will be the Rev. Jay Luther, a former pastor who was in Salem from 1981 through 1988.

After lunch at 12:30 p.m., the musical group Providence of Lincolnton, N.C., will perform. An offering will be taken.

THE REV. DAVID TUELL has become pastor of Christian Life Fellowship, a Pentecostal Holiness congregation in Salem. Tuell, 34, has come from an eight-year pastorate at The Ark of Fellowship Church in Rural Retreat.

He succeeds the Rev. Ken Kingrea, who has gone to Dublin to become mission and evangelism director for the Appalachian Conference and assistant superintendent for the regional Pentecostal Holiness denomination. The new pastor is married to Jill Tuell and is the father of two daughters.

THE SALEM AND ROANOKE COUNTY COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY, housed at South Market and Calhoun streets in Salem, is now under the direction of Barbara Bell and Anne Taylor Oakey.

The pantry needs paper products and personal toiletries. It is open for donations Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

MARY N. ORVILLE of Roanoke has been employed by St. Paul's Episcopal Church as the part-time missionary to the elderly and those confined to their homes or institutions by chronic illness.

Orville held a similar position for more than 15 years for a joint ministry of the Roanoke Valley's six Episcopal congregations before her retirement in 1993.
