CVB golf tourney set for Oct. 11

The CVB Open Fall Classic, sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, will be held Oct. 11 at Hanging Rock Golf Club.

This captain's choice tournament will feature longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and hole-in-one contests. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams. A cook-out will follow the tournament.

The entry deadline is Sept. 30. Fees are $400 per regular team or $100 per person. Hole and tournament sponsorships are also available. All proceeds will go toward the promotion of tourism in the Roanoke Valley.

Salem golf tourney to be held Oct. 1

The 13th annual City of Salem Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Oct. 1 at the Salem Municipal Golf Course. The deadline for registration is Wednesday.

Tee times are 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Entry fee is $20 per person.

Money from the tournament will benefit the "Hook-a-Kid-on-Golf" program and Dewey Gearhart, a heart transplant candidate.

Roanoker wins chess tournament

John Russell Potter of Roanoke tied with a Missouri man for the top prize in the Southwest Virginia Open Chess Tournament recently.

Sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Chess Club, the tournament brought 58 entries in three sections.

Potter was undefeated in the first five rounds, but then lost one game. In the final match, Potter was defeated by Roanoke City Chess Coordinator Chris Bush, but scored high enough overall to tie for the top prize.

Roanoke forming adult soccer league

The City of Roanoke is registering men age 35 and older and women 21 and older for the Over-35 Roanoke Soccer League.

Registration fee for a 10-week session is $15. Games are Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in Wasena Park.

Those interested should register at the Roanoke Parks and Recreation office at Wasena Park or call 985-8108 and leave a message.

The league is supported by the the Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department, but formed as an independent organization.

Ladies tennis tourney results

The following are results from the NDOR Tennis Club Ladies Closed Tennis Tournament held Aug. 26-28:

In 4.0 singles, Amy Rockhill defeated Ellie Bosen 6-3, 6-0. In 4.0 doubles, Rockhill and Mary Hunt defeated Bosen and Brenda Stickley 6-4, 6-3.

In the 3.5 category, Pam Lea Berry deafeated Virginia Gilliland 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Berry and Edna Brubaker defeated Gilliland and Connie Kennedy 6-2, 6-1.

The 3.0 singles winner was Vicki Honer, who defeated Amy Kusk 6-1, 7-6. In doubles, Honer and Jane Setzer defeated Terry Smith and Debby Rattenbury 6-2, 6-3.
