DEL. SHULER ADDS ADVISERS TO HELP HIM SIFT LEGISLATION

As he began a two-year term representing portions of Montgomery and Giles counties in the General Assembly, Del. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg, announced Wednesday the members of two more advisory councils to help him review legislation.

Last month, Shuler announced two panels to advise him on health care and business issues.

Shuler's new groups will study bills affecting higher education on the one hand, and kindergarten through 12th grade education on the other.

They will meet later this month and early next month to advise Shuler.

Michael Chandler, an associate professor with Tech's Institute for Community Resource Development, chairs the higher education group. Its other members, who either teach or fill staff positions at Tech, include: John Ashby, who edits the Spectrum, the faculty and staff newspaper; James Bohland, head of the department of urban affairs and planning; Anne Cheney, associate professor of English; Clara Cox, manager of public service communications; John Crunkilton, director of agriculture technology; Marjorie Dellers, executive secretary in public safety, health and transportation; and Janice Gibb, systems engineer in the computing center.

Other members include: Jim Johnson, the retired director of the Extension Service; Sherry McConnell, business manager of the college of arts and sciences; John Hillison, professor in agricultural education; Jim Marchman, aerospace and ocean engineering professor; Peggy Meszaros, dean of the college of human resources; Stephen Parson, associate professor in education; Edward Spencer, director of residential and dining programs; Charlie Stott, public affairs officer in the college of agriculture; Sarah Wheeler, enrollment coordinator in the college of engineering; and architecture professor Donald Sunshine.

Annette Perkins, a former teacher and current member of the Montgomery County School Board, will chair the education issues advisory council.

The membership includes: Mary Biggs, an elementary school teacher; Kern Alexander, a Tech education professor; Lynn Hill, who owns a day-care center; Mary Anne Lewis, an assistant dean of the college of education; Jim Sellers, assistant superintendent in Montgomery; Ray Van Dyke, co-principal of Gilbert Linkous Elementary School; Betti Kreye, a high school math teacher; Lynn Whitescarver, choral director for Montgomery schools; and Mike Sowder, a teacher in Floyd County and a former member of the Montgomery School Board.

Other members include: Al Guarino, general manager of Wolverine Gasket Co.; Jim Worley, a former teacher and administrator in Giles County; Fran Mitchell, with New River Community College; Don Lacy another Montgomery School Board member; Posey Jones, an agri-science teacher; Russell Holladay, personnel director with Montgomery schools; Margo Walter, a counselor in Giles schools; Paula Wilder, a former teacher and principal; Daisy Stewart, a vocational and technical education director; and Gary McCoy, principal of Blacksburg Middle School.
