WEATHER'S NO REASON NOT TO CYCLE

As yet another winter storm blanketed the area last week - this one of the ice variety - the roads became treacherous for drivers and the sidewalks impassable for pedestrians.

Yet when I went to see if I needed a tow truck to pull my car out of the drainage spillway where it had come to rest, I saw a vehicle making its way up the hill near where I live.

A single light showed through the dark night, so I knew it was a two-wheeler. But I heard no engine. Only a solitary rider, peddling his bicycle through the murk and muck.

Thus the fear of bad weather cannot be used an excuse not to go for a bicycle ride. So the New River Valley Bicycle Club has planned events on 12 of the 28 days in February.

Please note a bicycle helmet is required for all rides. Riders under age 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult and have a waiver signed by a parent for each ride.

The ride schedule is listed below:

Spruce Run Romp: An easy 25-mile ride along beautiful Spruce Run and Clover Hollow in Giles County. Meet Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Newport Community Center. Call ERIK GRONNING at 951-7618 for more information. Mount Tabor Toddle: About a 30-mile ride out Mt. Tabor Road and returning on Harding Road. Meet Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Virginia Tech chapel in Blacksburg. Call DOW SCOTT at 552-4607 for more information.

Wolf Creek Wander: About a 40-mile flat ride on Virginia 61 to Rocky Gap. Meet Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at Wolf Creek Park in Narrows. Call PAUL SMITH at 951- 7825 for more information.

Tour de Postponement: About a 40-mile ride through Shawsville and Elliston. Meet Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Tech Chapel. Call STEVE FELDMAN at 382-9125 for details. The ride has its name because every time Feldman has volunteered to lead a ride in the last several months, inclement weather has postponed it. So sometimes the elements do get the best of bicyclists.

Cruising Blacksburg: An easy 15-mile tour around the town. Meet Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Tech Chapel. Call TIM MYERS at 951-5285 for details.

Moonlight Madness Ride: A 20-mile nocturnal sojourn for waffles. Meet Feb. 25 at 11 p.m. at the Ellett Valley Food Time. Call Tim Myers at 951-5285 for details. And remember, proper lighting and attire are required to participate in this midnight madess.

Cruise with Christina: A 40-mile ride through Montgomery County. Meet Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at Tech Chapel. Call CHRISTINA BAUM at 745-3572 for details.

Climb the Wall: A 24-mile ride out Harding Road and back on Mt. Tabor Road with a trip up Gravel Hill Road thrown in for good measure. Meet Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Tech Chapel. Call Paul Smith at 951-7825 for details.

Ride to Nowhere: Indoor training rides at East Coasters Cycling in Blacksburg every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Bring your wind-trainer or rollers or call Steve Feldman (382-9125) or Tim Myers (951-5285) to arrange for a loaner.

\ ROUNDBALL REPORT: Craft's Crew and Athletes Choice remained unbeaten as the Pulaski Men's Basketball League season neared the end.

Both teams were tied at 12-0 with one game left - against each other. It was scheduled for Sunday.

Athletes Choice reached the showdown by routing McDonalds 154-35. WALTER BROOKS and TIM BLASINGASME each scored 27 points, leading six AC players in double figures.

The scoring outburst set a new league record for points in a game. The old mark was 153 by Penn's Funeral Home in 1987.

Meanwhile, Craft's Crew had to win a pair of closer games to run its league-record winning streak to 43 games.

It downed Stevens Funeral Home 74-63 behind 21 points from DOREA JONES. Then the Crew outscored Satellite Services 111-96 as SAM POINEDEXTER (35) and CHRIS ARNOLD (33) combined to pump in 68 points.

Elsewhere around the league, DOUG MABRY exploded for 51 points as Renfro beat McDonalds 80-74. His scoring tally equaled the largest individual scoring performance in the league this season. Also in that game, DEBBIE REEDY scored eight points for Renfro as she became the third woman player in league history.

Slam Dunk Cards set a new league record for most 3-point baskets in a season with 136, shattering the previous best of 120 by Bowers Plumbing in 1990.

ANTHONY AKERS of Slam Dunk Cards clinched the scoring title with a 27.6 points per game average. RANDY OLVERSON of Stevens Funeral Home is second at 27.1 ppg. Rounding out the top five scorers are MIKE SAMSON of Pulaski Hospital at 24.9, Poindexter of Craft's Crew at 23.9 ppg, and MARK QUESENBERRY of C&L Campers at 23.2.

And finally, the playoffs are scheduled to start tonight.

Through three games, the Blacksburg Men's A League also still has two unbeatens. The Team got 27 points from LLOYD ZELAZNY as it turned back the Home Boyz 66-44. The London Underground edged previously unbeaten First National Bank 59-55 behind 29 points from QUINTON NOTTINGHAM.

The Team's Zelazny has the top scoring average among players who have played three games with 26.3 ppg. His teammate, EDDIE SLOSS is second in the league at 22.3 ppg.

A trio of players who have only played twice are averaging more than 25 points an outing. OKEY HEATH of Big Tools is at 32.5 ppg, Nottingham of London Underground is at 30.0 ppg, and DAVID HERBSTER of P.K.'s is at 26.0 ppg.

The Blacksburg Men's B League has just one undefeated team left after three games. In a battle of unbeatens, GRANT WALKER scored a game-high 19 points to lift the Travel Squad over The Stupid.

Valley Chiropractic and Interior Design Nutrition are tied at 2-1 atop the standings in the Blacksburg Women's Open League.

Unbeaten teams abound in Christiansburg. In the Men's Slowbreak League, Triangle League (3-0), The Rebels (2-0), Santa's Helpers (2-0) and First National Bank (2-0) have all yet to taste defeat. In the Men's Church Slowbreak League, Christian Growth Center (2-0) and Presbyterian I (1-0) have yet to lose. And in the Women's Slowbreak League, Woodmen of the World (2-0) has victories over the league's other two teams.

\ GONE FISHIN': Two things are getting close. Fishing season. And the Bass Fishing Techniques 1994, a fishing clinic sponsored by Virginia Tech.

The accelerated course in bass fishing strategy will be held Feb. 12-13 at the Holiday Inn Tangelwood in Roanoke. The cost is $74.

Instructors include JIMMY HOUSTON, a two-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, the holder of 13 national bass fishing titles and the host of his own outdoors television series, and WOO DAVES, a 12-time Bassmaster Classic finalist and the 1990 classic runner-up.

For more information, call Virginia Tech at 231-5183.
