FORT CHISWELL ROLLS

Fort Chiswell led by 13 points after the first quarter and defeated Shawsville 80-65 in a Mountain Empire District basketball game Wednesday night.

The Pioneers made four 3-point goals in the first quarter and led 41-27 at halftime. Dyer Jackson had 25 points and Jody Burnett 23 for Fort Chiswell.

Tuesday's games

\ North Cross 90, Carlisle 72: In Martinsville, junior forward Monty Smith scored 33 points as the Raiders dominated the Chiefs in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Carlisle (4-12, 2-7) was paced by Kevin Warren with 24 points and Rod Mitchell with 19. \

Grayson County 51, Bland 43: In Bland, the Blue Devils took control in the fourth quarter to win a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County (13-3, 11-2) shook off a four-point deficit to win the fourth quarter 21-9. Brian Boyer had 13 points and Keith Weatherman 11 for the Blue Devils.

David Lambert and Kevin King had nine points each to lead Bland (7-7, 6-5).

\ Giles 70, Rocky Gap 35: In Pearisburg, Marty Smith and Patrick Steele scored 15 points apiece to lead the Spartans to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Eagles.

After grabbing a 41-27 lead after three quarters, Giles outscored Rocky Gap (3-11, 3-9) 29-8 in the fourth quarter to clinch the victory. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 66, Dan River 57: In Ringgold, the Cavaliers held off a late surge by the Wildcats to win a Piedmont District game.

Senior center Shane Donavant scored 20 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead Fieldale-Collinsville (8-8, 8-4).

Chris Wilson led the Wildcats (4-11, 4-9) with 22 points. \

Covington Boys' Home 97, Rainelle Christian 78: In Rainelle, W.Va., Donnie Costigan and Scottie Forbes combined for 65 points as the Indians won a non-conference game.

Costigan finished with 35 points and Forbes scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Covington Boys' Home (9-4) outscored Rainelle 31-19 in the final period.
