TV RATINGS FARING WELL

Television ratings for the first day of the Winter Olympics were up 43 percent over the Albertville Games two years ago.

The opening ceremonies received a 20.8 rating and a 34 share on CBS, Nielsen Media Research said Monday, up 43 percent from the Albertville Games two years ago, which got a 14.5 rating and a 24 share.

The rating was just short of the record for an opening ceremony. The Lake Placid Games in 1980 got a 22.7 rating on ABC with a 36 share. Still, the overall viewers Saturday night set a record.

Sunday's 29.2 was up 24 percent over the 23.5 rating on the second night at Albertville. Each ratings point represents 942,000 TV homes. The share is the percentage of televisions on at the time. - Associated Press
