RALLY GIVES GRAYSON MOUNTAIN EMPIRE TITLE

Grayson County trailed by 14 points after three quarters but came back defeat Giles 72-67 in overtime Friday and clinch the regular-season title in Mountain Empire District boys' basketball.

Keith Westerman and Bryan Boyer combined for 45 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter, for the Blue Devils (18-3, 16-2). Westerman finished with a game-high 23 points and Boyer added 22.

Denny Self scored five of his eight points in the overtime, including a 3-pointer off the opening tip that put Grayson County ahead 66-63.

Marty Smith had 13 points to lead the Spartans (11-8, 11-6). Giles also got 11 points apiece from Patrick Steele and Mitch Reed.

Giles had the ball in the backcourt with two seconds remaining in regulation but made a turnover. Boyer's attempt to end the game in regulation for Grayson County fell short at the buzzer. \

Narrows 77

Bland 74

NARROWS - The Green Wave completed an impressive week stuffed with makeup games, finishing 5-0 and passing three teams in the Mountain Empire District standings, capped by a victory over the visiting Rockets (10-10, 9-8).

Narrows (10-10, 10-8) trailed 22-8 after one quarter but roared back behind the scoring of junior Patrick Bailey and sophomore Bryan Pruett. They combined for 20 of the Green Wave's 26 third-quarter points. Brett Mosley's four free throws in the final 20 seconds iced the victory.

Bailey, Narrows' shooting guard, had six 3-point goals en route to a 26-point night. He finished the five-game week with 20 3-pointers. Pruett added 20 points.

Bland was led by Kevin King's 17 points, and 15 from Shannon Havens. The Rockets were edged by Narrows for the No. 5 seeding in next week's district tournament. \

Floyd County 84

Galax 39

FLOYD - Junior center Jason Light scored 25 points to lead the Buffaloes to a stomping of the Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District.

Senior Phillip Marshall added 13 points for Floyd County (16-3, 15-3), which opened up the game by outscoring the Tide 31-14 in the second quarter to take a 41-20 halftime lead.

Stevie Grimes' nine points led Galax (4-16, 4-14). \

Auburn 68

Rocky Gap 66

RINER - Randy Bonds scored 19 points as Auburn battled back from a 16-point first-quarter deficit to beat Rocky Gap in the Mountain Empire District.

Jon Reed scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half to key the comeback for Auburn (13-7, 12-6). Reed also had 12 rebounds. Mike Bower added 11 points and Terry Millirons 10 for Auburn.

Eric Faulkner paced Rocky Gap (5-15, 5-13) with 16 points. Dale Martin added 14 points, Nathan Blessing 12 and Tracy Bradshaw 11.

Auburn's Matt Davis blocked four shots in the game to set a single-season school record. Davis' total of 54 breaks the record of 51 set by Darin Greear in the 1989-90 season. \

Fort Chiswell 85

FORT CHISWELL - Senior wing Dyer Jackson scored 30 points as the Pioneers kept the Shawnees winless in the Mountain Empire District.

Junior Jody Burnett added 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Fort Chiswell (8-12, 7-11), which led 44-25 at halftime. T.J. King added 13 points and Brad Hughes had 10 assists.

For Shawsville (0-20, 0-18), Jeremy Nichols scored 20 points and Lee Stanton added 11. \

Christiansburg 58

Radford 54

CHRISTIANSBURG - John Hairston scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Blue Demons won a New River District game over the Bobcats.

Christiansburg (12-8, 4-1) trailed 38-32 entering the final period, but Hairston hit three 3-pointers and two field goals to spark the Blue Demons' rally.

Matt Linkous led Radford (4-15, 1-4) with 14 points. \

Pulaski County 74

Franklin County 49

DUBLIN - Tyrone Hash and Eric Webb combined for 45 points as the Cougars rolled past the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Hash finished with 23 points and Webb scored 22 as Pulaski County (6-11, 2-6) rolled in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars led by eight points after three quarters and outscored Franklin County 25-8 in the final period.

Pulaski County connected on 31 of 48 shots (64.5 percent) for the game.

Chad Foutz led the Eagles (8-11, 2-5) with 21 points and Carlos Holland added 15.

\ Covington 71

Craig County 58 COVINGTON - The Cougars used a 26-13 second quarter

to beat the Rockets in a Pioneer District game.

Covington (12-8, 10-2), playing its fourth game in five days, was led by Corey Hunter's 22 points and Dusty Roman's 13. Hunter scored 18 points in the second half.

Craig County (5-9, 4-7) led 9-8 after the first quarter, but the Cougars' big second quarter gave them the lead for good. \

Gateway Christian 70

Temple Christian 52

ABINGDON - Aaron Meadows scored 24 points and Ryan Gordon scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Crusaders won the Old Dominion Association of Christian Schools Regional Tournament.

Gateway (5-5) outscored Temple 20-5 in the second period to take control.

Allan Compton led Temple with 19 points. \
