4TH-SEEDED PANTHERS THINKING UPSET

The No. 4-seeded Ferrum Panthers will be thinking upset tonight when they take on top-seeded Christopher Newport at 8 p.m. in a semifinal game of the Dixie Conference men's basketball tournament.

The men's and women's tournaments are taking place today and Saturday at Ferrum's Swartz Gym.

The Captains are 21-3 overall and second behind Roanoke in this week's NCAA Division III South Region rankings. They were the regular-season Dixie Conference champions and won both of their games against Ferrum (12-12).

The Panthers advanced to the semifinals with a 71-60 victory over fifth-seeded Methodist on Tuesday. Christopher Newport had a first-round bye.

The Captains are led by senior Ted Berry, who averages 27.4 points per game, which is fourth best in the nation. Junior Jo-Jo Chambers averages 22.4 points and is ranked eighth in the nation in rebounding with 12.1 per game.

Junior Quincy Quick, who averages 18.1 per game this season and is Ferrum's second all-time leading scorer, is one of five Panthers averaging in double figures.

The other men's semifinal pits No. 6-seeded Shenandoah (9-16) against No. 2-seeded Greensboro at 4 p.m. The Hornets (22-3) are third in the South Region rankings.

The No. 3-seeded Ferrum women's team, which advanced to the semifinals by beating Shenandoah 69-51, plays No. 2-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan (10-15) at 6 p.m.

Ferrum (16-9) is led by freshman Glossary Smith, who averages 13.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Smith is ranked 12th in the nation in field-goal percentage at 57 percent. Senior Niki Claiborne, Ferrum's all-time leading scorer and second all-time rebounder, is averaging 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

N.C. Wesleyan is led by senior Lisa Tyson, the school's all-time leading scorer, who is averaging 17.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

In the other women's semifinal, No. 1 Christopher Newport (16-9) plays No. 4 Methodist (16-9) at 2 p.m. The Captains are led by senior Karen Barefoot, who needs five assists to reach 1,000 for her career, which would make her the only player in college history - men's or women's competition, all divisions - to reach the 2,000-point, 1,000-assist mark. She has 2,052 career points and is averaging 25.3 per game this season.

The championship of the women's tournament is Saturday at 6 p.m., and the men's final is at 8 p.m.
