SEAHAWKS EDGE HOKIES IN 12 INNINGS

In Wilmington, N.C., Battle Holley's two-run double in the bottom of the 12th inning gave North Carolina-Wilmington a 7-6 victory over Virginia Tech in the Hokies' opener.

Pat Smith's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning sent the game into extra innings for the Seahawks (4-4).

In Lexington, VMI split a doubleheader with Davidson to open its Southern Conference season.

Left-hander Marc Phillips gave up two hits in eight innings as the Keydets (3-3) beat the Wildcats 4-0 in the opener. Chad Blackwelder hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, giving Davidson (2-5) a 9-6 victory in the second game.

In Atlanta, Todd Cunningham went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI as Ferrum beat Emory 4-2 in its opener.

Keith Mayhour pitched all nine innings for the Panthers, giving up eight hits.
