SUMMERLIN LEADS UNC TO SWIMMING TITLE

In Tallahassee, Fla., Daniel Summerlin of Salem was the leading point-scorer for North Carolina as the Tar Heels won their second consecutive ACC men's swimming and diving championship.

Summerlin won his second consecutive 100-yard freestyle title, earning All-ACC honors with a pool-record time of 44.46 seconds. He also led off North Carolina's winning teams in the 800 and 400 freestyle relays.

The Tar Heels scored 781 points to beat Virginia (667), Florida State (614) and North Carolina State (505).

In Richmond, only two Timesland wrestlers placed in the Group AAA wrestling tournament. William Fleming's Herbert Kasey finished fourth in the 135-pound class and Franklin County's John Muse placed sixth at 160.

Kasey lost 6-2 in the third-place match and Muse lost 9-3 in the fifth-place match. Muse lost 10-6 in his semifinal, then was pinned in a consolation semifinal.

Great Bridge of Chesapeake won yet another Group AAA title, outdistancing runner-up Centreville 115.50-95.00. Franklin County was the top Timesland team, finishing tied for 41st place with 14 points.

In Washington, D.C., the Virginia men's soccer team visited Washington on Friday and received congratulations from President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore for three consecutive NCAA championships.

The president said he found the Cavaliers' teamwork and their record so impressive that he was tempted to put them to work on Capitol Hill rallying the support he needs to pass his legislative program.

"There are a lot of social and economic problems we can only face if we think of ourselves as a team," Clinton said.

Gore called the Cavaliers "the best college soccer team ever."

Before the speeches, two team members gave Clinton a brief display of their soccer technique, employing ankles, knees and other body parts to juggle the ball. They then presented both men with bright orange UVa jerseys. One was inscribed "Clinton 1," the other "Gore 2."

In Waynesboro, Deena Jones had 14 kills and nine service points as George Wythe overcame a shaky first game and won the Group A volleyball championship 3-15, 15-10, 15-6 over Stuarts Draft.

The Maroons finished the season 25-2.
