TAKE NOTE

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) health program provides nutritious foods to lower-income pregnant and breastfeeding women and to children under 5 who have certain unmet nutritional needs.

In an effort to promote breastfeeding, a Peer Counselor Program began in the New River Health District two years ago. At the end of 1993, 350 referrals had been made to the program, and the current caseload is 150 women. Peer counselors offer education, counseling and emotional support to women in the WIC program.
