RADFORD COACH AWAITS ODU CALL

With expectations that Old Dominion's search for a basketball coach will be winding up next week, Radford University coach Ron Bradley is awaiting word from ODU athletic director Jim Jarrett on scheduling an interview.

Bradley on Thursday said he understood that because Jarrett was in Atlanta at a meeting, they probably would not talk before Monday.

Meanwhile, another contender for the job, ODU assistant coach Pete Strickland, said he would be interviewing for the vacancy but was under orders not to say when.

"They said they'd like to get this thing [the search] wrapped up in seven to 10 days, so that means we'll probably know something next Wednesday," he said.

Jarrett could not be reached Thursday for comment.

Sources have said Jarrett intends to keep the process simple by interviewing only two or three candidates. Strickland and Bradley are involved.

Another name that has surfaced is Southwestern Louisiana's Marty Fletcher, the former VMI coach. Fletcher said this week that it was his policy not to discuss any basketball jobs except his current position.

Other names that have come up are those of Kansas aide Steve Robinson, a Roanoke native and an alumnus of Radford; and Tic Price, the former Virginia Tech and ODU assistant who was part of Tommy Joe Eagles' staff at Auburn.

Robinson said Thursday he had not been contacted by ODU officials.

"I really don't know very much about that situation," he said. "Until somebody calls me and tells me that Old Dominion is interested in talking to Steve Robinson, I'm not going to have anything to say about it."

Former Pitt coach Paul Evans and former California coach Lou Campanelli also have been mentioned in connection with the Monarchs' job. Even Marianne Stanley, the former ODU and Southern Cal women's coach, is reported to be interested.

"I'm just trying to focus on what I have to do," said Strickland, who lost out on the VMI job this week when James Madison assistant Bart Bellairs was hired.

The head coach's position at ODU opened when former Radford coach Oliver Purnell resigned to become head coach at Dayton. Strickland has an offer to join Purnell's staff.

In a related matter, Strickland said reports this week of a possible transfer by ODU star Odell Hodge, a former Timesland player of the year at Laurel Park High School, had been blown out of proportion.

"He's concerned about what's going to be happening here, but I think he'd like to stay," Strickland said. "I think he'd like to play for me."
