VIRGINIA TECH LEADS METRO GOLF

Defending champion Virginia Tech shot a 13-over-par 297 and maintained a six-shot lead over Southern Mississippi in the second round of the Metro Conference tournament in Haines City, Fla.

South Florida's Pat Brown fired a 1-under-par 70 and has a two-shot lead with a 141 in the individual competition. Tech's Brian Sharp shot a 2-over 73, giving him a 145 after two rounds, tied for fifth place.

The Hokies' Matt Martin also shot a 73 and is in 11th place, David Havens fired a 74, while Curtis Deal and Sean Farrell shot 77s on the 6,869-yard South Course at Grenelefe Resort.

The tournament concludes today.

Georgia Tech's Stewart Cink shook off three consecutive bogeys with birdies on two of the final three holes to lead the ACC men's championship by a shot after two rounds at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Cink leads the tournament with a two-day total of 4-under 140, a shot ahead of Florida State's Bobby Cochran.

North Carolina - thanks to Mark Wilson's low-round 68 - was eight strokes behind three-time defending champion Georgia Tech.

Wake Forest, ranked second in the nation, shot seven strokes better than its opening-round 303, but is in seventh and out of the title picture.

The Northern Virginia squad shot an even-par 288 to take the lead through Saturday's first round of the Virginia State Golf Association regional team matches at the Stoney Creek course at Wintergreen. Northern Virginia leads second-place Virginia Beach by eight strokes heading into today's final round.

The Roanoke team is in eighth place after shooting a first-day 300. Danville-Martinsville is seventh with a 302, and Lynchburg is ninth with a 307.

In Williamsburg, Scott Silas won medalist honors with a 76 to lead Hampden-Sydney to a first-place finish in the 16-team Shipbuilders Invitational. Hampden-Sydney fired an 18-hole 309, seven strokes ahead of second-place Christopher Newport. Bo Williams shot a 79 for Washington and Lee, which finished third with a 325.

In Huntington, W.Va., freshman Detra Edmunds won the long jump (18-feet, 5 1/2 inches) and the triple jump (35-3 1/2) to lead the Virginia Tech women's track and field team to a second-place finish in a tri-meet at Marshall. Kent State won the team competition with 103.5 points, followed by Tech (47.0) and Marshall (30.5).

Virginia Tech also finished second in the men's tri-meet in Huntington. Junior Tom Lankowicz won the 3,000 meters (8 minutes, 38.5 seconds), Brett Matthews was first in the 800 (1:54.6) and Marshall Ferguson won the 1,500 (3:59.5). Kent State won the men's competition with 103.3 points, followed by Tech (64.3) and Marshall (24.3).

Ferrum sophomore Shelley Bowles was named the Dixie Conference player of the year in softball for the second consecutive season. Bowles was joined on the all-conference first team by teammate Lisa Pendleton, a junior outfielder. Bowles and Pendleton were standouts at Franklin County High School.

South Florida knocked second-seeded Virginia Tech out of the hunt for the Metro Conference men's tennis championship by beating the Hokies 4-1 in a semifinal in New Orleans.

Courtney Fitch of Roanoke College set a school record in the men's high jump with a leap of 6-10\ at the Eastern Mennonite Royal Invitational in Harrisonburg. Fitch, a freshman from Princeton, N.J., qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships in Naperville, Ill., with the leap, which also set a meet record and a track record. Fitch was second in the long jump (22-1 1/2).

Roanoke freshman Renae Rose set a meet record by winning the 400 meters in 1:01.9. Rose, a freshman from Puyallup, Wash., placed second in the 200, third in the triple jump and third in the 100.

Ferrum placed three players in the finals of the Dixie Conference womens' tennis tournament in Newport News: Jan Kelley will be playing the No. 3 singles final, Heather Minter will play in the No. 4 singles final and Cindy Jancso will play in the No. 5 singles final.
