Shenandoah Life may not act quickly

The board of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. will hold its regular meeting Friday, but it is unlikely to name a successor to William R. Battle at that time.

Battle, a former president of Shenandoah Life, died Saturday at a Roanoke hospital. He had retired as president in 1989, although he filled the post on an interim basis from last June to December.

At the time of his death, he was chairman of the board's executive committee.

Shenandoah Life spokeswoman Donna Musselwhite said there is nothing in the bylaws that mandates immediate filling of the vacancy. If past experience is a guide, she said, the board may take three to six months to fill the seat.

Ormond closes Tanglewood shop

The Ormond woman's apparel store at Tanglewood Mall has been closed by The Ormond Shops Inc. of North Bergen, N.J., as part of the company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring.

Despite the closing last week, Ormond continues operating units at Valley View Mall and River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg.

The company said April 14 it had a $5 million line of credit that allowed it to pay suppliers so the Ormond shops could buy more merchandise. The company said it would close unprofitable stores as part of the bankruptcy.
