COUGARS ZAP CHARGERS 9-3

Jeffrey Tucker pitched a complete game for Covington as the Cougars defeated Bath County 9-3 in a Pioneer District baseball game Tuesday at Hot Springs.

Tucker walked one and struck out nine. Andy Lambert led Covington (6-2-1 overall, 3-0 Pioneer) at the plate with two hits.

David Buzzard had two hits for the Chargers (5-4, 1-3), who committed nine errors.

In other baseball:

In Lexington, Shane Whisnant and Brian Sells belted home runs to lead Northside to an 11-7 victory over Rockbridge County.

Jimmy Moore had a pair of doubles for the Wildcats (4-5). Northside is 7-1-1.

Freshman Wes Self pitched a five-hitter as Grayson County defeated Fort Chiswell 8-0 in a Mountain Empire District game.

Self also contributed two hits and two RBI for the Blue Devils (6-3, 2-0). Bobby Cheeks, Chad Shaffner and Brandon Ayers all added two hits each.

At Glenvar, Joey Taylor and Jake Weddle combined on a one-hitter to lead the Highlanders to a 14-1 victory over Craig County in the Pioneer District.

Tim Carroll went 3-for-5 and David Henderson 3-for-3 with two RBI for Glenvar (6-2-1, 4-0). Craig County is 1-7, 0-3.

Shawsville broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning to win 5-4 over Auburn in a Mountain Empire District game at Shawsville. With two outs, Andy Smith scored Ben Basham from third on an error by the Auburn third baseman. Smith also went the distance to earn the pitching victory for Shawsville (6-3, 1-0). Auburn is 3-6, 1-1.

At Narrows, Jeff White scattered 10 hits over seven innings to lead Narrows to a 7-3 Mountain Empire District victory over Floyd County. White (4-0) was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI for the Green Wave (6-1, 2-0). The Buffaloes are 8-3, 1-1.

At Pearisburg, Mitch Reed pitched a one-hitter as Giles routed Galax 29-2 in a Mountain Empire District game that was called after five innings. J.C. Riggs had a homer and a double and Bucky Burton contributed two hits and three RBI for Giles (3-4, 1-0), which took advantage of 13 Galax errors.

At Lynchburg, John Phillips struck out 15 and went 2-for-3 from the plate to help Timberlake Christian defeat Roanoke Valley Christian 10-2 in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Roanoke Valley Christian is 1-6, 1-4; Timberlake is 1-5, 1-5.

\ GOLF: J.D. Draper and Charlie Rhodes each shot 40 to earn medalist honors and help Carlisle to a 169-172 victory over North Cross at the par-35 Hunting Hills Country Club. K.J. Hippensteel's 42 was the low round for the Raiders.

\ SOFTBALL: Heather Ring was 3-for-4, including a solo home run in the first inning, and Amy Hayden went 2-for-3 with four RBI as William Byrd rolled past visiting Alleghany 12-4 in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Tracy Doupnik and Tamasa Adams combined to pitch a four-hitter for the Terriers (6-1-1 overall, 1-0 Blue Ridge) and struck out 10.

Nicole Curtis scored two runs to lead the Mountaineers (2-5, 0-1).

\ TRACK: At Laurel Park, James Millner won three events to lead Laurel Park to a victory in in boys' track.

Millner won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.1 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles (:42.69) and the high jump (6 feet, 3 inches).

Laurel Park was first with 119 points, followed by Fieldale-Collinsville (62) and Martinsville (53). The Lancers' girls' team also finished first in the meet with a total of 105 points. Magna Vista was second with 81 and Patrick County third with 56.

Miranda Hairston won the 3,200-meter run (12:26) and the 1,500-meter run (5:43) for Laurel Park. Also, Cheron Lampkins won the 100-meter hurdles (:16.89) and the 300-meter hurdles (:52.13).
