EAGLES BLANK COLONELS

Franklin County's Keith Mattson scored two goals to help send William Fleming to its first boys' soccer loss of the season 3-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game at River's Edge on Tuesday.

Ut Thach had the other goal for the Eagles (4-2-2 overall, 1-0-1 RVD).

The Colonels are 6-1, 1-1.

In other boys' soccer:

William Byrd remained undefeated by beating visiting Christiansburg 7-0 in a non-conference game. Andy McCaskill scored three goals and Matt Bryant added two for the Terriers (5-0), who outshot the Demons 25-6.

Casey Underwood scored both of Radford's goals as the Bobcats (8-1) blanked host Salem 2-0 in a non-district match. Salem is 3-3.

Brian Sharp had one goal and two assists to lead Cave Spring to its first victory, 3-0 over Pulaski County in the Roanoke Valley District. Justin Brittle earned the shutout in goal for the Knights (1-3-1, 1-1-1).

Adam Sabine and Jason Chockley had goals to lead Staunton River (2-5) to a 2-0 victory over Amherst County (0-6-1).

\ BASEBALL: Gabe Sander hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run third inning for Lord Botetourt as the Cavaliers and Salem finished tied 9-9 after seven innings in a Blue Ridge District game called because of darkness. Charlie Hammersley and Chris Dudding each hit a triple to lead Salem (4-1-1).

Bobby Skeen was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for E.C. Glass, which beat Patrick Henry 9-3 in a non-district game. Ryan Johnston led PH (1-7) by going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Chris Carr blasted a three-run homer and Shannon Gray went 3-for-3 as William Byrd edged Alleghany 4-3 in a Blue Ridge District game at Low Moor. Carr also got the win for the Terriers as he allowed nine hits and struck out six.

At Cave Spring, Robey Caldwell pitched four innings of one-hit ball as the Knights defeated Pulaski County 17-9 in the Roanoke Valley District. Caldwell (3-3) struck out eight and earned the victory for Cave Spring (6-3, 4-1).

For Pulaski (3-6, 1-3), Jason McNew hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and Jeremy Arnold added a homer and two RBI.

In Lexington, Sean Whisnant and Brian Sells belted home runs to lead Northside (7-1-1) to an 11-7 victory over Rockbridge County (4-5).

At Glenvar, Joey Taylor and Jake Weddle combined on a one-hitter to lead the Highlanders (6-2-1, 4-0) to a 14-1 victory over Craig County (1-7, 0-3) in the Pioneer District.

At Lynchburg, John Phillips struck out 15 strikeouts and went 2-for-3 from the plate to help Timberlake Christian (1-5, 1-5) defeat Roanoke Valley Christian 10-2 in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Matt Helbreth singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Tazewell (5-0) a 7-6 non-district victory over visiting Christiansburg. The Demons (4-5) tied the score at 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning. Byron Gates went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for the Demons.

Shawsville broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning to win 5-4 over Auburn in a Mountain Empire District game at Shawsville. Andy Smith went the distance to earn the pitching victory for Shawsville (6-3, 1-0). Danny Dickerson led Auburn (3-6, 1-1) by going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

At Narrows, Jeff White (4-0) scattered 10 hits over seven innings to lead Narrows to a 7-3 Mountain Empire District victory over Floyd County (8-3, 1-1). White was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI for the Green Wave (6-1, 2-0). Dwayne Hale and Peter Bucklin had two hits each for the Buffaloes (8-3, 1-1).

At Pearisburg, Mitch Reed pitched a one-hitter as Giles (3-4, 1-0) routed Galax 29-2 in a Mountain Empire District game called after five innings.

\ SOFTBALL: At Daleville, Rhonda Rankin pitched a six-hit shutout for Salem, which clobbered Lord Botetourt 14-0 in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams. Carry Jenkins had two RBI and Rankin added a solo homer for the Spartans (8-0). Lord Botetourt is 3-3.

At Northside, the Vikings cruised to a 15-0 Blue Ridge District victory over Rockbridge County behind Shannon Yopp's pitching. Yopp (5-1) had 12 strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory for Northside (8-1, 1-0). Erin Weaver added a triple for the Vikings.

Franklin County pummeled William Fleming 19-4 at Rocky Mount in the teams' RVD opener. Shannon Conley and Tanya Jones combined for a two-hitter for the Eagles (5-5 overall).

Blair Calvert went 4-for-5 with four RBI and Lisa Baetz was 4-for-5 with three RBI as North Cross (4-3, 3-0) beat host Roanoke Valley Christian 14-4 to remain undefeated in the Blue Ridge Conference. RVC is 4-1 and 4-1.

Heather Ring was 3-for-4, including a solo home run in the first inning, and Amy Hayden went 2-for-3 with four RBI as William Byrd (6-1-1, 1-0) rolled past visiting Alleghany 12-4 in a Blue Ridge District game.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Ann Stetzel scored two goals in the second half as Roanoke Catholic (2-3-1) rallied to beat Stuart Hall 5-3 at River's Edge Sports Complex in the teams' Blue Ridge Conference opener.

At North Cross, Mary Jennings and Amber Jackson scored one goal each as the Raiders (3-4-1) beat Salem 2-0 in a non-conference game. Salem is 1-2-2.
