TRAILER PARK PROPOSAL BACK, WITH CHANGES

A controversial Elliston trailer park proposal will be back before the Montgomery County Planning Commission tonight at 7 p.m.

Frank A. Howard has resubmitted a proposal to build a mobile home park on 18 acres at Cove Hollow Road and Howard Drive, near the Roanoke County line.

Howard withdrew his original proposal for a 76-lot development in November in the face of a possible defeat before the county Board of Supervisors.

In October, the Planning Commission had recommended denial of the rezoning and special-use permit, in part because of potential traffic problems because of the site's proximity to U.S. 11/460 and a railroad crossing.

Neighboring landowners objected to the proposal because they believed it would not fit in with the surrounding area. Some also said children would be endangered because the park would be so close to the Norfolk Southern rail line.

This time, Howard has slightly reduced the project's density and taken steps to provide more of a buffer to neighbors to the west. He's asking that the five lots closest to the neighbors be approved for double-wide trailers on larger lots.

That would create a separation between the neighbors and the more densely developed 68-lot section.
