HEARINGS HELD ON TAX REFUNDS

Legislative committees will hold a public hearing Thursday in Lynchburg on Gov. George Allen's proposed $234 million settlement with federal retirees who were taxed illegally.

The hearing is one of four to be held simultaneously around the state at 1 p.m. that day by members of the Appropriations and Finance committees of the House of Delegates. The others will be in Abingdon, Fairfax and Norfolk. A fifth hearing will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Richmond.

The Lynchburg hearing will be on the campus of Central Virginia Community College.

The Senate Finance Committee will hold a public hearing at 3 p.m. today in Richmond.

The General Assembly plans to meet Monday to vote on the settlement plan, which would offer the 185,000 retirees half of what they paid under a pension tax policy overturned by the courts.
