WOLFE, THOMAS LIFT BATH TO BASEBALL WIN

Billy Thomas scored on Cory Wolfe's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning Wednesday to give Bath County a 2-1 win over James River in a Pioneer District baseball game in Buchanan.

Chris Phillips picked up the win for the Chargers, allowing three hits and striking out five.

In other baseball:

In Wytheville, Derek Englehard and Ryan Biddle each went 3-for-5 and Biddle drove in three runs to lead Radford past George Wythe 10-6 in non-district action.

Chris Carr blasted a three-run homer and Shannon Gray went 3-for-3 as William Byrd edged Alleghany 4-3 in a Blue Ridge District game at Low Moor on Tuesday. Carr also got the win for the Terriers as he allowed nine hits and struck out six. David Cummings smashed a solo home run for Alleghany (5-3). Pitcher Patrick Hall (2-1) gave up four hits, three runs, walked two and struck out eight in a losing cause.

\ SOFTBALL: Amy Layman pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 batters as host Glenvar rallied to beat Parry McCluer 3-2 in a Pioneer District game.

Parry McCluer scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Glenvar battled back and Kelly Winter scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

At Northside, the Vikings cruised to a 15-0 Blue Ridge District victory over Rockbridge County on Tuesday behind strong pitching by Shannon Yopp. Yopp (5-1) had 12 strikeouts in five innings to earn the victory for Northside (8-1, 1-0). Erin Weaver added a triple for the Vikings.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: In Hot Springs, Jamie McElwee won 9-7 after trailing 6-3 in a pro set at first singles as Bath County beat rival Alleghany for the third time this season, 8-1.

\ TRACK: Corey Hunter won the long jump and triple jump and Chris Merrill won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters as the Covington boys' team won a four-team meet in Covington. Merrill turned in a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 14 seconds in the 3,200.

The Covington girls' team also won their meet.
