TECH TAKES 2 FROM UVA

Virginia Tech's baseball team got a double dose of good news Wednesday: a doubleheader sweep of Virginia at English Field in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (22-17) won the opener 5-3, scoring three runs in the first inning. Tech's first four runs were unearned.

Bryce Gammon (3-2) got the victory in relief. Charlie Gillian picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Hokies overcame a seven-run deficit to win the second game 11-10. The Cavaliers (16-24) scored eight runs in the fourth inning to build a 9-2 lead. But the Hokies closed to 9-8 with a five-run sixth inning. Shortstop Mike Terhune hit a two-run single to start the rally, then Virginia third baseman Brian McGettigan threw wildly to third base trying to nail Tech's John Mader, allowing two Hokies to score.

After Virginia scored in the top of the seventh to make it 10-8, the Hokies came back with three runs to gain the victory. Reserve catcher Josh Herman, in his first-at-bat of the day, belted a solo home run to make it 10-9. Justin Dobson then walked and moved to second on Popeye Smith's single. Mader then sacrificed, and first baseman David Fitt singled through the middle of the diamond, driving in two runs to give Tech the victory.

In other sports in the region:

In Radford, junior Duane Filchner hit a pair of home runs as Radford drilled James Madison 9-1 in a non-conference college baseball game.

The Highlanders (20-17) held JMU (25-15) in check, limiting the nation's seventh-rated hitting team to three hits. Starter Jim Abbott (3-3) picked up the victory, giving up one hit in four innings.

In Richmond, Reese Murdaugh pitched a three-hitter and struck out a

career-high 13 as Virginia Commonwealth (23-15) beat VMI 6-1 in college baseball.

Nate Shepperson had two hits to lead the Keydets (15-23).
