WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Zoo elects officers

The Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia, which operates Mill Mountain Zoo and ACRES in Roanoke, has elected these officers and board members for this year: Kenneth O. Robison II, president; Steven L. Higgs, vice president; Dr. David Trinkle, secretary; Michael Hatcher, treasurer; and board members Michael Hatcher, Michael Quinn, Virginia Agee, Keith Austin, C. Whitney Brown Jr., Mark Cole, Jane Coulter, Charles W. Crosson Jr., Carl Guffy, Forrest Moore, Daniel G. Oakey and Richard Wells.

In other news:

The zoo received a grant of $3,100 from the B. Wilson Porterfield Jr. Foundation for educational support funding of children up to 6 years old. The funds will be used for animal programs on and off the zoo grounds for students of Greenvale Nursery in Roanoke.

Animals born at the zoo recently are a golden-lion tamarin and a Matschie's tree kangaroo joey. The tamarin is a native of the Brazilian rainforest and was born on March 17. It can be seen riding on the female's back.

Tree kangaroos are found in a small northeastern corner of New Guinea. The joey will remain in the mother's pouch for another two to three months.

A pair of white-naped cranes from East Asia have been placed together in hopes of a successful pairing.

The mountain lion on exhibit at the zoo for 14 years died over the winter. The zoo hopes to have a fund drive to renovate that exhibit into a display for snow leopards by the end of summer.
