FRANKLIN COUNTY HIGHWAYS PROVE DEADLY TO 3

Three people died in two accidents in Franklin County since Tuesday night, bringing the number of traffic fatalities in the county this year to nine.

Michael Andrew Smith was driving west on Virginia 636 near Smith Mountain Lake shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday at high speed when his car crossed the center line and struck an eastbound car head-on, state police said. Smith, 25, of Boones Mill, was pronounced dead at the scene. David Ronald Trout Jr., 35, of Rocky Mount, a passenger, also was killed.

In an earlier accident, Willard Haven Williams, 56, of Henry was killed about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday when his northbound car slid off the right side of U.S. 220, swerved back across the pavement into the median and flipped over, state police said.
