RELIGION BRIEFS

DR. DANE McBRIDE, a Roanoke immunologist since 1985, has assumed office as president of the Roanoke Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is taking over the volunteer administrative position from Albert F. Turner, who served for nine years.

Like all Mormons, McBride is a layman. He will preside over the work of the 12 congregations in the Roanoke Region and will continue his medical practice.

McBride received his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, and has been a seminary teacher, a bishop, counselor to a bishop and member of the Stake High Council. He also has been active in the National Conference of Christians and Jews and the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference.

He has chosen as his counselors Roger L. Bohon and Michael S. Blais, who also have been active in Mormon work for many years.

ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES, an interfaith agency to help the needy in the Roanoke Valley, is seeking the gift of a piano, a refrigerator and a beeper for use in RAM House, its day shelter for the homeless. The agency also needs volunteers who are skilled in giving financial counsel and volunteers to pick up its recyclable cans. Call 345-9786 to donate or volunteer.

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED, an ecumenical and interracial group affiliated with a national organization, has scheduled its annual May Fellowship Day program on May 6 at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2922 Corbieshaw Road S.W.

``Go and Act in Community'' is its theme, with emphasis on human service projects CWU supports in the Roanoke Valley. A luncheon follows the 10:30 meeting. Call 774-8126 to reserve the $3.50 meal.

AIRLEE COURT BAPTIST CHURCH, 4827 Delray St. N.W., will be host to First Baptist Church on North Jefferson Street and Forest Park Baptist Church for a musical program on Sunday night at 7.

GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 4404 Williamson Road, has scheduled revival services Sunday through Thursday nights at 7:30. The Rev. Paul C. Harris of Parrish Court United Methodist Church in Covington, will be the guest preacher. A nursery will be provided.

A TEEN SUMMIT with workshops for youth and their parents will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W.

Participants may choose two workshops. They include ``Dress, Music and Self-Respect'' led by the Rev. Thomas Word Jr.; ``Peer Pressure: Out of Control'' led by Calene Johnson-Alene, and ``Sex and Teen Pregnancy'' led by a representative from Crisis Pregnancy Center.

The program for parents will cover aspects of self-respect, drug abuse prevention and understanding youth concerns.

THE REV. JUDY REIMER, national moderator-elect of the Church of the Brethren and a member of the Williamson Road church, will be the Woman's Day speaker May 1 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church on Reservoir Road, Hollins. Women attending are to wear black-and-white attire.

THE JOHN HUBBARD MEMORIAL ENSEMBLE will observe its 20th anniversary Sunday at 4 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 1415 Eighth St. N.W. Guest singers will be James Carrington and the Virginia Mass Choir of Richmond.
