BENT MOUNTAIN SCHOOL GETS GARDENING GRANT

Bent Mountain Elementary School has received a Youth Garden Grant from the National Gardening Association. The school will receive more than $500 worth of tools, seeds and garden products contributed by companies in the lawn and garden industry nationwide.

Roberta Johnson, a teacher and coordinator of the project, said the grant will be used to create a butterfly garden as both an educational tool and community beautification effort. The Bent Mountain Women's Club, civic league and Boy Scouts will also contribute to the project.

Businesses and private individuals also are donating money and materials to the garden. Students, who are growing plants in their classrooms, will plant them at a dedication Friday, which is Earth Day.

The school was selected from nearly 900 children's gardening programs nationwide for the award.
