Roanoker is president of development group

Wayne Strickland, executive director of the Fifth Planing District Commission, has been elected president of the Development District Association of Appalachia. He was chosen at a recent association meeting in Arlington.

The association assists planning and developmental groups that serve Appalachian communities by providing leadership support and guidance.

Roanoker recognized for service in Army

The quartermaster general of the United States Army has recognized a Roanoke man for ``distinguished'' service in the quartermaster corps.

Retired Col. Norman E. Elmore of Dexter Road Northwest Elmorewas inducted as a distinguished member of the the U.S. Army Quartermaster Regiment at a ceremony at Fort Lee, in March.

The Distinguished Members of the Regiment program recognizes quartermasters who have performed exceptional services and made significant contributions to the corps.

Elmore was commissioned a second lieutenant in the corps at Fort Lee in September 1942, after two years of enlisted service in the 116th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.

He served in logistical assignments at the Richmond Armed Services Depot and the Office of the Quartermaster General in Washington in World War II and on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon during the Korean War.

Elmore was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1965 and retired in 1975 after the 33 years of active and reserve Army duty.

He is an active member of the 29th Division Association, the Retired Officers Association, the Military Order of World Wars, the Korean War Veterans Associations, the American Legion and the board of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation.
