In Baltimore, Cherie Greer scored six goals and set up one, and goalie Michelle Cusimano stopped 18 shots as fourth-ranked Virginia beat top-ranked Loyola (Md.) 12-9 on Thursday in a women's lacrosse game in Baltimore.

Loyola (15-1) scored twice in the final 15 seconds of the first half to tie the score at 7. UVa (10-2) outscored the Greyhounds 5-2 in the second half to pull the upset.

In Rocky Mount, Jason Wilson went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and five RBI, and Keith Mayhew moved to the brink of a Ferrum pitching record as the Panthers pounded Guilford 20-2 at Franklin County Middle School.

Mayhew (7-1) held the Quakers (14-18) to three hits and one walk while striking out 10 in six innings for Ferrum (24-5). He has 20 victories, one shy of the school record set from 1989-92 by Scott Clawson.

Peter Lawrence and Kurt Swoboda became the first tennis players in VMI history to be voted All-Southern Conference, earning berths in doubles.

They are seeded first at No. 2 doubles in the Southern Conference tournament, which begins today in Davidson, N.C. The duo posted a 10-1 record in match play this year.

Liberty scored five runs in the bottom of first inning to beat VMI 9-2 in a non-conference baseball game.

In Rock Hill, S.C., Radford won its first game in the Big South Conference softball tournament, then lost its next two in the double-elimination event.

The Highlanders (11-32) beat Liberty 8-3 in the first game as catcher Amy Pseja had four RBI and a solo home run. Radford lost 9-6 to top-seeded Campbell, and fell 7-6 in eight innings to Charleston Southern in the consolation bracket.

Roanoke's Sara Goodman, a senior outfielder at Campbell, was named to the All-Big South Conference softball team. Goodman finished eighth in the conference in batting with a .355 average, was tied in first for triples (seven), second in doubles (15) and fifth in RBI (32). in Scoreboard, B4.)

Matt Forgie shot a 1-over-par 73 to take medalist honors and help Lynchburg team win the Bridgewater Invitational golf tournament at Staunton's Ingleside Country Club. Lynchburg carded a 307 to edge out Washington and Lee by one stroke. Roanoke College was fourth with a 321.

Top-seeded Virginia will meet Duke, the only conference rival to defeat the Cavaliers, in the first round of the ACC men's lacrosse tournament at 8 p.m. today in Charlottesville.

North Carolina, seeded second, will meet Maryland at 6:30 p.m. at Klockner Stadium. The Tar Heels have won the past seven championships, the past six under the tournament format.

The championship game will be 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $6 for the semifinals and $5 for the final ($4 and $3 for children under 18).
