ROCKBRIDGE NIPS SALEM

Greg Stubblefield of Rockbridge County struck out Salem's Bryan Monroe with a runner on second base in the top of the seventh to preserve a 7-6 Blue Ridge District baseball victory Tuesday on the Wildcats' diamond.

Stubblefield also went 3-for-4 with a double, a grand slam and five RBI. Rockbridge is 6-5 overall, 2-1 in the district. Salem is 2-2 in the district.

In other baseball:

Eric Wade's two-out hit in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Bobby Melton with the winning run as Galax edged Fort Chiswell 9-8 in the Mountain Empire District. Justin Lineberry had three hits for the Maroon Tide (3-9 overall, 1-3 MED). Gary Arnold led Fort Chiswell (2-9, 0-4) with three hits.

James Fisher struck out eight and Jeff Jones followed suit with a two-hitter as Craig County took a Pioneer District doubleheader at Highland 7-1 and 4-0. Johnny Crawford and Dwain Sowers each had two hits in the first game for Craig (4-7, 3-3). Highland is 0-6, 0-5.

Ben Basham and Kevin Mann each homered for Shawsville as the Shawnees won 11-6 at Rocky Gap in a Mountain Empire District game. Mann, Brad Dalton and Mark Akers all had three hits for Shawsville (9-3, 3-0). Rocky Gap is 1-8, 0-3.

\ SOFTBALL: Ashley Moore's solo home run keyed a three-run sixth inning as Lord Botetourt rallied from two runs down to beat visiting Alleghany 9-7 in a Blue Ridge District game. Lord Botetourt is 5-3, 2-1.

Heather Worley hit a grand slam and had five RBI as Parry McCluer beat Glenvar 16-2.

\ GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD: Miranda Hairston won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, and Wanda Hairston heaved the discus a track-record 116 feet, 11 inches to lead Laurel Park to a team victory in an invitational meet at the Lancers' facility.

\ BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD: Franklin County won the team title, but Claude Becker of Fieldale-Collinsville won the long jump, the high jump and the triple jump as the outstanding performer in a meet at Laurel Park High School. Becker leaped 20-3 in the long jump, cleared 5-11 in the high jump and covered 44-4 3/4 in the triple jump.
