VAN PELT SETS RADFORD MARK

Radford scored 23 runs and rapped 24 hits in two games, and senior first baseman Denny Van Pelt broke the school's career home runs record, but the Highlanders managed only a doubleheader split with Virginia Intermont on Tuesday in college baseball at Dedmon Center Park.

After routing the NAIA Cobras 17-1 in the first game, the Highlanders gave up 17 hits and committed three errors in losing the second game 13-6. Radford (24-19) took advantage of 10 Intermont walks and got home runs from Alex Vaxmonsky, Brian Pardue and Roanoke's Kelly Dampeer in the opener.

Intermont (17-25), which beat Radford two of three times this year, trailed 6-5 in the second game before scoring eight runs in the final three innings. Van Pelt's third-inning homer in the second game was the 24th of his career, bettering the old mark of 23 set by Travis Morgan.

In Richmond, Washington and Lee won the team title and the Generals' Buck Leslie was named coach of the year at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference golf championships.

The Generals finished with a two-round total of 620 on the par-72 course at The Crossings. Randolph-Macon was second, eight strokes back, and Roanoke (650) finished sixth. scores and All-ODAC team in Scoreboard, B4.)

Steve White of Randolph-Macon shot a 4-over-par 148 to win the individual title by three strokes over Pearce Smithwick of Guilford.

In Ashland, Scott Mackley scored seven goals and Colin Higgins had six assists as Washington and Lee won its second consecutive ODAC men's lacrosse title by defeating Randolph-Macon 18-8.

W&L (8-4 overall, 5-1 in the ODAC) put away the game by outscoring the Yellow Jackets (7-6, 1-4) in the second period 6-1.

In Lexington, Lindsay Coleman, Nicole Ripken and Angie Carrington scored three goals each as Washington and Lee advanced to an ODAC tournament semifinal with a 15-9 women's lacrosse victory over Sweet Briar.

O Virginia's Peggy Kellers was named coach of the year and the Cavaliers'

Eileen Schmidt, Paloma Vanderzanden, Tanya Spishak and Michelle Collins were named to the all-conference team in ACC softball.

Kellers, in her second season at UVa, guided the Cavaliers to their first ACC tournament title. She has a 59-29 record in two seasons, including 27-17 this year.

VMI scored three times in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-4 baseball victory over crosstown rival Washington and Lee.

The Keydets (19-27) closed their regular season by getting two hits each from Franco Martin, Louie Napoleon and Ryan Glynn. Bates Brown had one hit to set a single-season record (36) for the Generals.

In Towson, Md., Cherie Greer scored seven goals as third-ranked Virginia routed Towson State 20-2 in women's lacrosse. The Cavaliers (11-2) outshot Towson State 57-11.

Hollins' riding team will look to defend its Miller's Cup national championship this weekend at the 21st annual Intercollegiate National Horse Show at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

The competition is scheduled Friday through Sunday. Last year, Hollins rider Parris Cozart of Abingdon won the Cacchione Cup, which is presented to the best individual rider in the nation.

If Hollins wins the title, it will be the first time the same school has won consecutive team championships.

The six riders competing for Hollins this weekend are sophomores Maria Bishop of Charlottesville, Becky Forbes of Stuarts Draft and Emmy Weigel of Mountain Lakes, N.J., and freshmen Merrie Walker of San Diego, Edy Pickens of Spartanburg, S.C., and Jenny Kischner of Seaview, Wash.
