SALEM'S BATS COME TO LIFE IN 9-2 VICTORY

The Salem Buccaneers rapped 15 hits Tuesday night en route to a 9-2 Carolina League baseball victory over the Prince William Cannons.

Danny Clyburn got the Bucs started when he slugged a 400-foot home run to straightaway center field in the second inning. Salem added a pair of runs in the fourth inning on singles by Jon Farrell and Marcus Hanel. Another run in the fifth gave the Bucs a 4-0 lead.

Prince William cut its deficit in half when left fielder Charles Poe homered with a man aboard, but the Buccaneers retaliated in the sixth on Daryl Ratliff's two-run double, extending the lead to 6-2.

Center fielder Jeff Conger and Farrell led Salem's offensive barrage, each going 3-for-5. Reed Secrist and Ratliff had two hits apiece, and Ratliff drove in four runs.

The beneficiary of the outburst was Ted Klamm, who picked up his first victory of the season by pitching six innings and striking out six. Dave Doorneweerd was impressive in one inning of relief, striking out all three Cannons he faced.
