EDWARDS' BACKGROUND IN MILITARY, LAW, POLITICS

John Edwards, 50, is a Roanoke native. He was voted ``most likely to succeed'' by his 1962 graduating class at Patrick Henry High School.

He was an honor graduate of Princeton University, where he studied history. He spent a year on a fellowship at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and got his law degree at the University of Virginia.

Edwards was a captain in the Marine Corps from 1971 to 1973. He has practiced law in Roanoke since 1976 and was U.S. Attorney for Western Virginia from 1980 to 1981.

He has been active in the Democratic Party, serving on city, 6th District and state central committees. He was chairman of the district and state committees from 1987 to 1993. He lost a three-way race in 1992 for the Democratic nomination for the 6th District congressional seat.

John and Sara Edwards have three children, ages 11 to 18.
