PROPOSAL: LET CIVILIANS ATTEND ARMY SCHOOLS

A congressman has proposed opening the unique training available at six Army schools to civilians, whose tuition would help the military cover the cost of running the schools.

Rep. Sam Farr, D-Calif., has introduced a bill for a trial program to open six noncombat schools operated by the Training and Doctrine Command, which is based at Fort Monroe in Hampton.

On Farr's list are the Army Logistics Management College and the Army Quartermaster Center and School, both at Fort Lee in Petersburg. Also included is the Defense Language Institute's Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, which is in Farr's district.

Nonmilitary students would be allowed in only if space was available and would have to repay the Army for the course.
