CANFIELD TO STEP DOWN AFTER 1994-95 SEASON

Verne Canfield, the Washington and Lee men's basketball coach for 30 years, will step down after the 1994-95 season, the Roanoke Times & World-News has learned.

Canfield could not be reached for comment Tuesday night, but sources close to the W&L athletic department said the school will make an announcement today on Canfield's status.

"I do not feel it would be appropriate to comment at this time," W&L athletic director Mike Walsh said Tuesday afternoon.

Canfield, who has a record of 450-322, is a tenured member of the W&L faculty and will remain as associate professor of physical education and director of intramurals.

Canfield was hired in September 1964 and directed the Generals to eight conference championships, including the Old Dominion Athletic Association title in 1980.

His final team at W&L will have the nucleus of a young team that went 9-15 this past season.
